Last week, North Carolina Secretary of State Elaine F. Marshall spoke to a full house at the Peggy M. Seegars Senior Center in Goldsboro, NC.

Secretary Marshall was one of the featured speakers at the "Elder Abuse, Scam & Fraud Awareness Symposium" organized by Wayne County's Services on Aging.

"It's an honor to be here with you as we mark World Elder Abuse Awareness Month and prepare to mark World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on June 15th," she said. "But I want us to keep that same focus on protecting seniors every day of the year."

Secretary Marshall then explained to attendees that she and her agency has jurisdiction over specific areas of fraud, including investment and charity fraud, notary fraud and counterfeit trademarks. She warned attendees to be mindful of counterfeit prescription drugs and THC-infused gummies packaged to look like popular snack foods. She also held up an example of a counterfeited hat promoting the Atlanta Braves that had been seized by her trademark enforcement agents. See if you can spot a huge clue that the hat is a counterfeit. (Hint: What sport do the Atlanta Braves play?)

If you suspect you may have been the victim of an investment, charity, notary or counterfeit trademark fraud, you can file a complaint at https://www.sosnc.gov/forms/by_title/_Tip_And_Complaint.

Following the Scam Jam at the Haywood County Senior Resource Center, North Carolina Secretary of State Elaine F. Marshall joined a group of local officials and business leaders for lunch at Boojum Brewing Company on Main Street in Town of Waynesville, North Carolina. The restaurant’s manager, Braden Dickerson, told the guests the company took its name from the Appalachian folk legend, the Boojum, a mythical, Bigfoot-like creature who collected mountain gemstones and hid them in discarded liquor jugs. Last week, North Carolina Secretary of State Elaine F. Marshall spent a full day in the Town of Waynesville, North Carolina in beautiful Haywood County. She started her day at a Scam Jam hosted by the Haywood County Senior Resource Center. She was joined by representatives from the NC Department of Insurance SHIIP/Medicare Senior Patrol Program and the Haywood County Sheriff's Office.

Secretary Marshall provided tips to seniors on how to spot and avoid scams involving fraudulent investments, charities, notaries, fake prescription drugs and counterfeit consumer goods.

”Approximately half of our Securities investigations involve fraud being targeted at senior citizens,” she told the group. “Always call our North Carolina Investor Hotline at (800) 688-4507 before you hand over any of your hard-earned money in an investment to make sure both the person offering the investment, and the investment itself, are registered with my office.”

She warned attendees about the health and safety concerns associated with counterfeit trademarks, particularly those involving fake prescription medicines and THC-infused “edibles” packaged fraudulently to look like popular snack foods. These latter items can be especially dangerous to children who mistake them for the snack foods they mimic.

Many thanks to the wonderful staff of the Haywood County Senior Resource Center for hosting the event. (Post 1 of 4)
