I was honored to be a guest of Major General Todd Hunt, Adjutant General of the North Carolina National Guard, at this morning’s 9/11 Memorial Ceremony held outside Joint Force Headquarters in Raleigh. It is always a solemn occasion and was executed flawlessly with dignity, respect and honor for all who were lost on that tragic day and the days following in service to our country. Like most Americans, I remember exactly where I was that day. I was returning to Raleigh that morning by air and heard the news upon landing at RDU International Airport. The memory has left a lasting impression on me and the resolve to never forget. (~EFM)

Last Thursday was a great day in Alamance County as North Carolina Secretary of State Elaine F. Marshall visited Alamance Community College for a meaningful conversation with local leaders, business owners and community stakeholders.

The morning included a Business Roundtable & Open Discussion at the Biotechnology Center of Excellence in Graham NC, bringing together community voices to discuss:

• Workforce development & the talent pipeline
• The current business climate and opportunities
• Business growth & collaboration
• Importance of networking
• The challenges and successes of local businesses

Welcome Remarks provided by:
Dr. Ken Ingle, President, Alamance Community College and Kelly Allen, Chair, Alamance County, Board of Commissioners.

During my time as Secretary of State, I have developed a strong bond, both personally and professionally, with North Carolina’s Nepalese community. I have been honored to participate in many of their events and celebrations, and this vibrant community is truly near and dear to me.

Our hearts go out to the people of Nepal, as well as their families and friends here in North Carolina, as they face the devastating impact of floods and landslides across the country.

I ask all North Carolinians to join me in standing with our Nepalese community during this difficult time with compassion, prayers, and support. The Nepal Center of North Carolina (NC NC) is harnessing the power of community to organize relief efforts in response to this ongoing disaster. (~EFM)

RALEIGH – Following a multi-year investigation by notary law enforcement agents with the North Carolina Secretary of State’s Office, a Buncombe County Superior Court Judge today sentenced Lisa Roberts-Allen, 64, to a minimum of 75 months with a maximum of 102 months in prison for her role in a real estate fraud case.

A jury found Roberts-Allen guilty of six counts of forging a deed – a Class H Felony. She was also convicted of two Class C Felonies for Obtaining Property by False Pretenses of a value of more than $100,000. In addition to the sentence, Special Superior Court Judge Steve Warren ordered restitution of $55,000.

“Ms. Roberts-Allen portrayed herself as a housing advocate seeking to help those in need while in actuality helping herself to the generational wealth of vulnerable families,” said NC Secretary of State Elaine F. Marshall following today’s conviction and sentencing. Secretary Marshall added, “I am gratified to see justice delivered in the second trial of the three individuals who were charged in this case.”

The first suspect to stand trial in this case, attorney Robert P. Tucker II, was sentenced in February to a minimum of 48 months and a maximum of 70 months in prison for his role in this case. A second attorney, Ilesanmi Adaramola, is awaiting trial on notary fraud and forgery charges related to this case.

The NC Secretary of State’s Office served as Special Prosecutors at the request of the Buncombe County District Attorney’s Office.

The discussion focused on best practices for notaries working with attorneys, lenders and title companies.
