PUBLIC SAFETY ALERT
WARNING TO MANSFIELD TOWNSHIP RESIDENTS – JURY DUTY WARRANT SCAM
Please be aware of a phone and text message scam targeting residents of Mansfield Township.
Residents are being contacted by individuals claiming to represent the Warren County Sheriff's Department. The caller or text message alleges that the recipient has an outstanding arrest warrant due to failing to report for jury duty.
The messages may appear official and may even include what is represented as a copy of an arrest warrant. Recipients are then instructed to call a phone number and read certain statements or information aloud over the telephone.
The individual on the other end of the call may then present an ultimatum: either face arrest by law enforcement or resolve the alleged warrant immediately by making a payment over the phone. Payment methods may include Bitcoin, cryptocurrency, or other electronic payment methods through a third party.
THIS IS A SCAM. DO NOT FALL FOR IT!
Please remember:
Law enforcement agencies do not resolve outstanding arrest warrants by accepting Bitcoin, cryptocurrency, gift cards, or electronic payments through third parties over the phone.
Do not provide personal information, financial information, banking information, or verification codes to these callers.
Do not read statements or other information aloud as instructed by the caller.
Do not call back the telephone number provided in the text message.
Do not send money or attempt to settle the alleged warrant through any payment method requested.
If you receive one of these calls or messages, hang up and do not respond. If you have concerns about whether a warrant or jury duty matter is legitimate, independently contact the Warren County Sheriff's Department or the appropriate court using a publicly listed, verified telephone number.
If you have already provided information or sent money, contact your financial institution immediately and report the incident to local law enforcement.
Please share this warning with family members, friends, neighbors, and especially elderly residents who may be more vulnerable to these types of deceptive tactics.
Scammers are becoming increasingly sophisticated and are using official-looking documents, threats of arrest, and intimidation to pressure people into acting quickly. Take a moment to verify before you act.
When in doubt, hang up. Do not pay. Verify independently.
Help us protect our Mansfield Township community by spreading the word.
