Today’s extrication training provided our EMT students with valuable hands-on experience in safely and efficiently removing patients from simulated emergency scenarios. Students worked through realistic situations involving unrestrained passengers, head injuries caused by impact with the windshield, and vehicle doors that were unable to be opened, requiring critical problem-solving and the use of proper extrication techniques. Through teamwork, communication, and the application of classroom knowledge, students strengthened essential skills needed to respond confidently in high-pressure situations. This exercise highlights our program’s commitment to experiential learning and developing competent, compassionate emergency medical professionals ready to serve their communities. Though standards are ever changing, backboards were utilized in these scenarios for movement of simulated patients. Students were educated on time and place for utilization of all tools at their disposal. We, at the training center, would like to thank the crews of Meigs EMS and the Racine Volunteer Fire Department for assisting in this class today. We would also like to thank Riverside Auto and Towing for providing the vehicle used in this scenario.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Brentten’s family and friends!

This morning, 1-10-2026, our department learned of the untimely and unexpected passing of senior firefighter Brentten Young, Unit 26, of the Pomeroy Fire Department.

Brentten joined the department as a Junior Firefighter on October 4th, 2015 and served our community faithfully until his passing. Throughout the years he has been an active member of the department contributing hours of professional and dedicated service, climbing the ranks to become one of the best firefighters on station 1. As a result of his hard work, dedication, and knowledge of our department, he was elected by his peers to serve as a Lieutenant of the department during the 2024-2025 election cycle. As the department scaled back its officer number this election, Brentten continued to selflessly serve with a sense of integrity, pride and an unmistakable commitment to those in need. In our time of loss, we fondly recall the courage, passion and professionalism in which he served, using his benchmarks as we continue to answer the call for service.

Our department sends our heartfelt condolences to his parents, siblings, family and friends, all of whom loved Brentten immensely. We appreciate the kind words and support we have received from departments and individuals near and far. Funeral arrangements will be announced at the convenience of the family.

Rest easy Unit 26, we’ve got it from here.
