⚠ All Clear: Threat Investigation at Plant Yates ⚠

On Monday afternoon at 1:41 p.m., Coweta County 911 received a call from the Georgia Power security team regarding a bomb threat note written on the wall of a portable toilet at Plant Yates, located at 708 Dyer Road. Approximately 800 staff members and workers were immediately evacuated from the facility as state and federal partners arrived to investigate and inspect the threat. Local agencies, including the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office with K9 units, Coweta County Fire Rescue, and Coweta County 911/Emergency Management Agency (EMA), assisted in the response.

No devices were found at the facility, and public safety officials cleared the potential threat.

Dyer Road is now open to the public.

Highway 16 has been shut down and plant staff are being evacuated.

The Coweta County Board of Commissioners approved the County Administrator's appointment of Greg Shinkle to serve as Coweta County Fire Chief, effective October 1, 2026, following Robby Flanagan's retirement after 30 years of service.

“It truly is my honor to be considered for the position of Fire Chief and serve the citizens and visitors of Coweta County,” says Shinkle. “Albert Mohler said it best in his book ‘The Conviction to Lead’ – the most effective leaders are unstoppable teachers. They teach by word, example and sheer force of passion. My desire is to be a great teacher.”

Coweta County Fire Resue (CCFR) has proudly achieved Letter of Review (LOR) status for its new paramedic program through the Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs for the Emergency Medical Services Professions (CoAEMSP).

Under the leadership of EMS Training Director James Anderson, the program allows CCFR to start training students while it continues the accreditation process. The initiative supports workforce development, improves patient care and prepares for continued growth in call volume across the County.

By training emergency medical technicians (EMTs), advanced emergency medical technicians (AEMTs) and paramedics internally and partnering with regional healthcare providers like Piedmont and Tanner, CCFR is strengthening its ability to serve the community with highly trained personnel.

“Our responsibility is to train people to a high standard and prepare them to perform in real-life situations,” Anderson shares. “That is what this program is built to do.”

Full accreditation is awarded after the program’s first cohort graduates and required outcomes are reviewed.

After 30 years of service to Coweta County Fire Rescue, Fire Chief Robby Flanagan will retire on September 30, 2026.

Chief Flanagan began his career with Coweta County Fire Rescue as a firefighter in 1996 and was appointed Fire Chief in June 2021. During his tenure, he has led a department of more than 200 firefighters, paramedics, EMTs, and support staff who serve our growing community. Under his leadership, the department has enhanced its training program, constructed new facilities at Fire Station 5 and Fire Station 10, launched a new telehealth option for non-emergency calls, acquired new fleet and apparatus to better serve citizens and visitors, and responded to numerous emergencies and disasters, including the 2021 EF‑4 tornado.

According to Chief Flanagan, “Serving as Fire Chief has been the greatest privilege of my career. I have had the opportunity to work alongside some of the most dedicated, courageous, and compassionate professionals in the fire service. The men and women of Coweta County Fire Rescue are truly exceptional, and I have complete confidence that they will continue to uphold the highest standards of service long after my retirement.”

We are deeply grateful for Chief Flanagan’s leadership, dedication, and decades of service to Coweta County.

We wish him all the best in his next chapter and look forward to the fire department’s continued commitment to serving our community for years to come.
