Q1 Recap: 4th and 5th grade edition

It’s been a fast quarter 1 in 4-5 library and our oldest elementary classes have worked hard!

📕We learned how to organize the fiction section and find books using the clues on the book and our alphabetizing skills.

📗 We put lists of mixed up books in the correct order and then used those skills to search the shelves for specific authors in shelf races.

📘We investigated wrecked shelves to find the big problems and looked closely at the details to identify some hard to catch books in mixed up places. Then we used our library skills to get them in the exact right spot.

📙We discovered new books and authors and worked to determine genres.

📚COMING SOON: 5th grade shelf managers are assigned and this crew is making plans and getting ready to take control of the stacks!

When the K-12 library means your K’s and your 12’s do library together.

Kinder learned about book care this afternoon while Mrs. Taylor’s high school students picked up reading material for their Holocaust projects and some of our middle school students even showed up in the middle of it all to check out books. By the end of the hour we had just enough time for our big kids to join our little kids on the carpet for some reading, thinking, and sharing.

It’s Johnny Appleseed Day in the MCE Library! One of our favorite days in first grade every year. Thanks to Johnny for walking all the way to MCE again this year to share stories of his adventures and remind our first graders that they each have great POTENTIAL just like a tiny apple seed has the potential to become a great apple tree. Until next year.

If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to scan every book in the library collection, this is an incredibly accurate illustration of the end of year library inventory progression. But this junior librarian did get a whole stack of nonfiction inventoried today.

1. Focused and efficient.
2. Excited for the buzzer sound of a lost book to break up the monotony of one scan after another.
3. Distracted by the books you didn’t know were on the shelf and the focus is wearing down.
4.Finally the bottom shelf and so over it.
5. DONE with it all.

We had a very special guest reader in 2nd grade library today. She read us some silly stories and I got to tell this guy that I’ve known his grandma since I was about his age. I remember spending time after school browsing the shelves at Nellie’s Book Cellar as a kid when I would ride the school bus to my dad’s office in the same building. I love that she got to join us today as we wrap up 2nd grade library.
