It’s Bus Week in Monterey! Spot any cool or different buses around town? 👀 From double-decker buses to zero-emission buses and beautifully wrapped buses highlighting Monterey Bay, there’s a lot to see!

It’s all part of the California Transit Association Conference, bringing transit agencies from across California together to share ideas, learn from one another, and find new ways to make bus service better for the communities we serve.

We know it’s tempting to ride or walk on that smooth, freshly poured concrete. But the SURF! busways are for buses only, both during construction and once they’re up and running.

The good news? You can still enjoy the newly expanded multiuse trail right next to the busway. It’s the perfect place to walk, run, or bike.

For everyone’s safety, MST will begin enforcing busway access restrictions. Please help us keep the busway safe and ready for the buses it’s built for.

Today Monterey-Salinas Transit mourns the passing of labor and civil rights icon Dolores Huerta

Huerta's work directly impacted agricultural workers across Monterey County how her efforts shaped generations of families in the Salinas and Pajaro.

When Auggie began his career with MST in 1996, our buses were different, technology was different, and the way we maintained our fleet was different. Over the past three decades, fuel costs, parts, safety standards, and maintenance practices have evolved significantly. At the same time, expectations for safety, reliability, efficiency, and environmental responsibility have continued to grow.

Through all these changes, one thing has remained constant: the importance of skilled, dedicated employees who show up every day to keep our fleet safe, clean, reliable, and ready to serve our community.

For 30 years, that's exactly what Auggie has done.

Please join us in celebrating Augustine “Auggie” Ruelas and thanking him for his incredible dedication and 30 years of service to Monterey-Salinas Transit.

This week, we had the honor of sitting down with Xilonem Perez Gonzaga, a proud Seaside native and Yale University student, who has chosen to focus her senior thesis on the history and impact of the MST Trolley.

Our first trolley, The Wave, began service in 1992 through the support of the Monterey Bay Unified Air Pollution Control District, the Monterey Bay Aquarium, and the American Tin Cannery Outlet Center. At the time, MST was one of only four transit agencies in the nation operating an electric bus in daily service.

We are excited to read Xilonem's thesis and honored that MST's historic trolley system will be part of her academic research. Stories like these remind us how public transit helps shape and connect our communities across generations.
