👇 One of the less visible but most important parts of floodplain restoration is what happens before planting begins.

🌾 Crews strip the first foot of topsoil across the restoration area, removing the non-native seed bank that would otherwise compete with native plants during revegetation. That material gets buried under earthwork mounds and capped with clean soil, giving native species a much better chance of recolonizing on their own.

🌱 Across all three phases, the project also includes active planting of 175,000 native plants. Together, the seed bank removal and the planting program work toward the same goal: a self-sustaining ecosystem along the Carmel River.

😎 Plovers have also broken out the summer wardrobe!

🌞 During their March through September breeding season, western snowy plovers will develop breeding plumage, a temporary change signaling that a bird is ready to mate.
🔭Lets learn how to identify plovers through all of their life stages!

Now that you can ID them, do your part to protect the plovers and:
🐶Keep dogs on-leash year-round at Marina Dunes Preserve.
🚯Clean up trash and leftover food to keep from attracting plover predators.
🚧Stay clear of posted nest area fencing and sensitive habitat areas.
Thank you for protecting the plovers!

🚜The big equipment is back at Palo Corona Regional Park!
The scraper fleet has mobilized to begin Phase 2 earthwork, expanding the Rancho Cañada Floodplain Restoration into the eastern section of the former golf course.

🌱 Scrapers move and regrade large volumes of soil to lower the floodplain elevation, bringing the ground closer to the river and giving the Carmel River the room it needs to spread, slow, and rebuild habitat naturally.
