SHERA DUKES’s debut music release, DRAGONFLY, is a collection of groovy meditative instrumentals. Inviting participants to draw inward and listen deeply as they journey through the various soundscapes.
This EP is a genuine expression of SHERA DUKES’s personal journey in discovering her truest self through space, time, frequency, stillness, activity, and much more.

Artist Bio: SHERA DUKES
SHERA DUKES is a Memphis-born multidisciplinary artist blending yoga, sound, music, and technology to create immersive experiences. Her work fuses ethereal voices, heart-thumping grooves, and cinematic soundscapes into eclectic meditative journeys. Rooted in yogic & holistic practices coupled with modern scientific understandings, Shera explores the connection between vibration, movement, and consciousness. Through her unique approach to sound and wellness, she invites audiences to listen deeper, move freely, and resonate with sound in a new way.

LONG PLAY: Childish Gambino — Awaken, My Love! (2016)

A psychedelic journey through funk, soul, and R&B, Awaken, My Love! marked a dramatic reinvention of Childish Gambino’s sound. Working with producer Ludwig Göransson, Gambino created an album filled with deep bass, layered vocals, and rich sonic textures inspired by the music of the 1970s.

Legendary mastering engineer Bernie Grundman helped bring it all together, creating a cohesive listening experience from a collection of songs that explore remarkably different musical territory.

Last night, Robert Gordon and David Less reached deep into their vaults and brought out the usual jewels: rare recordings, little seen footage, and stories that make Memphis music history come alive. The kind of treasures you might never know existed, shared by people who know the stories behind them.

A Memphis gospel holy grail, straight from the source. 🙌

Pastor Juan D. Shipp stopped by the Memphis Listening Lab today, bringing stories from a lifetime of championing Memphis gospel. Through his D’Vine Spirituals label, he’s been recording artists and nurturing this city’s gospel community since the early ’70s. And he’s still at it.

Pictured here is “Yes to My Lord” by Jimmie Batchelor & The Mt. Pisgah Choir. Pastor Shipp told us 500 copies were pressed, and this is the only surviving copy he knows of. A little gospel history you can hold in your hands.

GORENOGRAPHY — A SPECIAL LISTENING SESSION WITH DJ REDEYE Luke Sexton

Join us as Memphis DJ and producer Luke Sexton, aka DJ Redeye, presents his new project, GORENOGRAPHY. We’ll hear the finished work and talk with Luke about the fascinating creative process behind it.

But this isn’t just another listening event. For us, it’s something much more meaningful.

When John King donated his extraordinary collection to help establish the Memphis Listening Lab, he gave us much more than a music library. He gave us a collection that tells the story of recorded sound itself.

Among those thousands of recordings are fascinating artifacts from the early days of radio: sound effects, commercial advertisements, and recordings used to bring stories and imaginary worlds to life over the airwaves.

These records were tools of the trade. And decades later, they’re helping create something entirely new.

Over the course of the past year, Luke explored this remarkable corner of John’s collection, ultimately sampling 101 different records to create GORENOGRAPHY.

Think about that for a moment.

Sounds originally recorded for radio broadcasts and advertisements have found an entirely new life as the building blocks of a contemporary musical work.

And it all happened right here at the Memphis Listening Lab.

This project represents something fundamental to our mission. We believe a music collection should be more than an archive. It should be a living resource where history can be discovered, shared, reinterpreted, and used to inspire new creative work.

John spent a lifetime collecting and preserving these recordings. Luke has taken a small piece of that history and transformed it into something completely unexpected.

And it’s exactly why the word LAB is part of our name.
