Please join the Tipton County Museum and the Tipton County Veterans Council as we honor and give thanks to Jerry Hamilton Owen for his long and dedicated service to our country and community on Tuesday, Sept. 8 at 6:30 at the Tipton County Museum.

Jerry Hamilton Owen was born on March 17, 1943, to Charlie and Margaret Ralph Owen of Covington. After graduating from Byars-Hall High School in 1961, he attended Memphis State and Lambuth College for his advance degrees.

He married the love of his life, Dianne Trotter, on Sept. 4, 1965, and promptly received his draft notice from Uncle Sam two weeks later. This event prompted him to enlist in the Tennessee Army National Guard. Among his many varied duties, Jerry was a Mechanical Maintenance Supervisor, a Signal Support Systems Specialist, a Cavalry Scout, and an Infantryman. Like most military personnel during Vietnam and at the height of the Cold War, he completed over four weeks of Nuclear-Biological-Chemical (NBC) training ranging from NBC Defense to NBC Warfare. He served during State activation periods in Memphis for the policeman strikes, the Sanitation Strike and the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. His last six months he was called to active duty and served in Virginia Beach immediately after 9/11. The Guard retired him after he turned 60 years of age, but not before he had completed 37 years, 5 months and 12 days of service to his country.

Master Sergeant Owen completed an exemplary career and earned innumerable awards for his service to our great Nation. Among other awards, he was presented nine Army Reserve Component Achievement Medals, three Armed Forces Reserve Medals, three Non-Commissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbons, three National Defense Service Medals, the Tennessee National Guard Volunteer Ribbon, seven Tennessee National Guard Service Ribbon, two Tennessee National Guard Commendation Ribbon, two Tennessee National Guard Individual Achievement Ribbon, the Tennessee National Guard Service Ribbon, the Tennessee National Guard Governor’s Meritorious Unit Citation, the Tennessee National Guard Distinguished Unit Commendation, and the Tennessee National Guard Volunteer Recruiting & Retention Unit Citation.

Jerry and Dianne, are the proud parents of Deanna Owen and Charles Brandon Owen, and the grandparents of Cole and Julia Keisling, and Trey and Ella Owen. He was nominated for Veteran of the Month by his beloved brother, Wayne Owen.
