5 Ways to Make Community Events More Inclusive!
There are so many exciting community events happening across North Alabama! But have we stopped to think about what makes an event welcoming and accessible to everyone?
Inclusion doesn't always require a big budget or major changes. Sometimes, small, thoughtful adjustments can make a world of difference for individuals with disabilities and their families.
Here are 5 ways to make your next community event more inclusive:
1️⃣ Help Attendees Know What to Expect
Share event details ahead of time, including pictures, schedules, and visual supports. Knowing what to expect can help individuals and families prepare and feel more comfortable attending.
2️⃣ Create Space for Sensory Needs
Consider offering a quiet space or sensory-friendly options, such as reduced music, softer lighting, or opportunities to take a break from the crowd.
3️⃣ Make Space for Everyone
Check that pathways are accessible and provide seating throughout the event. Small considerations can make a big difference for people with mobility needs.
4️⃣ Offer Different Ways to Participate
Not everyone participates in the same way! Let people watch before joining, take breaks, adapt activities, or choose what works best for them. Participation doesn't have to look the same for everyone.
5️⃣ Focus on Belonging, Not Just Attendance
Inclusion means more than simply opening the doors and inviting everyone. It's about creating an environment where people feel welcomed, respected, valued, and genuinely part of the community. Listen to the experiences of people with disabilities and their families, consider what barriers might exist, and look for ways to make participation meaningful for everyone. The goal isn't for everyone to do things the same way, it's for everyone to have the opportunity to belong.
💙 Inclusion isn't just about being invited. It's about belonging.
