Another group of Angelenos is officially trained, prepared, and ready to help their families, neighbors, and communities when disaster strikes.

Over the course of their CERT training, these graduates learned essential skills in disaster preparedness, fire safety, disaster medical operations, light search & rescue, team organization, and more.

LAFD CERT, the Encino Neighborhood Council, and LAFD Battalion 10 teamed up to host a FREE CPR class at the Encino Community Center!

👏 78 community members joined us to learn lifesaving CPR skills, with 53 participants taking the extra step to earn an optional 2 year AHA BLS certification at a deeply discounted rate.

A huge thank you to our outstanding instructors — Chief Robert Barna, Firefighter Jason Lawrence, and EMS Educator Anthony Keane for bringing their knowledge, humor, and real world experience into the classroom. Their stories and hands on instruction help make lifesaving skills practical, memorable, and approachable.

And a special shoutout to our incredible CERT volunteers who gave up part of their Saturday and braved the Valley heat to help make this training possible: Michelle A., Bob B., Brad B., Glenn D., Gary H., Jeff H., Cris Q., Martin R., Wade T., and Vincent W. 👏

Every second counts during a cardiac arrest. Immediate bystander CPR can double or even triple a person’s chance of survival, but too many victims don’t receive help before first responders arrive.

Hands-Only CPR is simple:

✅ Check for responsiveness and normal breathing.
☎️ Call 911 and send someone to get an AED.
🫀 Push hard and fast in the center of the chest at 100–120 compressions per minute, about 2 inches deep, allowing the chest to fully recoil after each compression.
⚡ Use an AED as soon as it becomes available and follow the voice prompts.

Today, LAFD CERT instructors were at Dodger Stadium, training stadium staff in hands-only CPR and life saving skills. When more people know how to respond in a cardiac emergency, our entire community becomes safer.

Firefighter VanGorder and Firefighter Opperman recently joined the LA Junior Lifeguards to teach hands-on emergency preparedness, including fire extinguisher use, Stop the Bleed, and essential safety skills.

By giving young people the knowledge and confidence to act in an emergency, we’re helping build safer, more resilient communities one lesson at a time.
