As part of this exciting occasion, Kwik Trip generously donated $2,500 to the Little Falls Police Department (LFPD) and $2,500 to the Little Falls Fire Department (LFFD)!

These generous donations are a wonderful way to support the dedicated men and women who work hard every day to keep our community safe. We are grateful to Kwik Trip for investing in Little Falls and showing support for our local first responders! ❤️

Let's Talk Fire Safety.......

These photos are from a fire several years ago. The first photo is during our size-up just after arriving. The second photo of the deck area with some flames visible is during suppression. The final photo is a close-up of the are of origin.

What do you think the cause was? Based on the burn pattern on the side of the house in the second photo, the fire clearly started on the deck and burned up the side of the house and then spread through the attic/roof.

If you guessed discarded smoking materials, you are correct. In this case, the cigarette butts were being discarded into a metal can on the deck. The problem is, metal cans rust through over time and the smoldering butts can fall through and start other combustible items on fire. Also, as the butts sit in the can, they can build heat and smolder for long periods, sometimes even days or weeks.

Later this same year, we had another building fire caused by discarded smoking materials. That time, the ci******es were being discarded into a potted plant just outside the residence. Potted plants often have soil that contains material like peat moss that can actually smolder and hold heat. If the pot is plastic, it can eventually start on fire and then spread to nearby items.

Always have a safe way to discard cigarette butts. We recommend dousing them with water if possible or into a fireproof container with sand.

We mentioned a little while back that we purchased three used trucks the past few months. We highlighted the ladder truck first. Next we will show you our new Rescue 1. This truck is a large pumper/tanker which replaced two trucks, a heavy rescue and a water tender. We were limited on space in our stations, so we we were able to save space by consolidating two trucks into one. New Rescue 1 is a 2007 Spartan/Rosenbauer with a 1,500 gallon per minute pump and 2,700 gallons of water. Since it has a full sized water pump, it can serve as additional fire engine if one of our other engines goes down for maintenance. The truck is labeled as Rescue 1 because it carries a majority of our specialized rescue equipment such as auto extrication and ice rescue gear. This truck was purchased directly from Lake Elmo Fire Department. Thank you to Chief Kalis and his team for working with us to make this purchase and give us the opportunity to give their truck a second life serving the community of Little Falls.

We visited several places during Fire Prevention Week to discuss fire safety.

This year's theme is "Charge into Fire Safety." Here are a few tips when charging battery devices.......

• Safe Equipment: Use only manufacturer-approved chargers and cords, and look for safety certification marks like UL, ETL, or CSA.
• Proper Surfaces: Always charge devices on hard, flat surfaces (such as a table or desk) instead of beds, couches, pillows, or rugs.
• Timely Unplugging: Unplug devices immediately once they are fully charged and avoid leaving them plugged in overnight or unattended.
• E-Mobility Safety: Charge larger items like e-bikes, e-scooters, hoverboards, and power tools outdoors when possible.
• Warning Signs: Discontinue use immediately if a device or battery gets unusually hot, starts swelling, smells strange, or makes odd noises.
• Responsible Disposal: Never throw lithium-ion batteries into standard household trash; take them to a designated recycling center.

We have been fortunate to be able to purchase some used fire apparatus to upgrade our fleet the past few months. We are still working to get the trucks into service. Here is our new Ladder 1, a 2004 Pierce 100 foot platform, along with the truck it is replacing, a 1997 American Lafrance 75 foot ladder. The new truck has a longer ladder which provides us more reach and also provides a safe working platform for firefighters. The truck was purchased from the City of Woodbury MN and should serve our community for at least 10 - 15 years at a fraction of the cost of a new truck.

Our team has had a busy week of training.

Last weekend, we completed our quarterly rope rescue training at Camp Ripley with several of our public safety partners.

During the week, we had the privilege of working alongside some experts in wildfire tactics.

We rounded out the week on Saturday with a live burn of an acquired structure. These training burns provide our new and seasoned firefighters with real word scenario based training. Prior to the burn, there is a permit process through the DNR and MN Pollution Control Agency. The structure needs to be inspected and any asbestos and other hazardous items removed.

Thank you to all of our partner agencies that participated in the training burn. Camp Ripley Fire, Mayo Clinic Ambulance, Sartell Fire Department, Pierz Fire Department, Bowlus Fire Department, and Royalton Fire Department.
