As we head into Memorial Day weekend, many of us are looking forward to spending time outdoors with family and friends. Whether you are traveling, heading to the lake, or attending graduation celebrations, I want to encourage everyone to make safety a priority.
For those riding ATVs and recreational vehicles, please ride responsibly and respect private property. Excessive speed, careless operation, and trespassing create unnecessary dangers and can quickly ruin the weekend for others. Make sure your equipment is working properly and never operate while impaired.
We also know Memorial Day weekend marks the beginning of a very busy boating and water recreation season. Please use extra caution around lakes and rivers, especially when children are nearby. Drowning can happen quickly and quietly. Keep constant supervision on kids, have properly fitted life jackets available, and never assume someone else is watching them. Boaters should make sure all safety equipment is on board and watch for changing weather conditions.
Motorists should also expect increased traffic throughout the holiday weekend. Please slow down, buckle up, stay off your phones, and drive patiently. A few extra minutes are never worth risking someone’s life.
Most importantly, Memorial Day is much more than the unofficial start of summer. It is a time to honor and remember the brave men and women of our military who gave their lives in service to our country. Their sacrifice is the reason we are able to enjoy the freedoms we often take for granted. Please take a moment this weekend to reflect on those heroes and the families they left behind.
On behalf of the Sheriff’s Office, thank you to all who have served and continue to serve our nation. We wish everyone a safe, respectful, and meaningful Memorial Day weekend.
