Speed is the reason too many crashes in Broward County end the way they do.

In July, Lauderhill's Traffic Unit issued 629 citations — roughly 48% of every citation written by this department last month — with enforcement was concentrated on Inverrary Boulevard, NW 31st Avenue, and Rock Island Road.

Those corridors weren't chosen at random. They came from your complaints, from our crash data, and from traffic studies our unit ran.

Our officers also joined Operation Southern Slow Down, the annual multi-state speed enforcement campaign run with the Florida Department of Transportation, FLHSMV, the Florida Highway Patrol, and agencies in Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina and Tennessee.

Meanwhile, our traffic homicide investigators carried four active fatality investigations, one serious bodily injury crash, and 19 hit-and-run cases in July alone.

Every one of those files started with a driver who was going too fast, following too close, or decided the light was still yellow.

Slow down on Inverrary. Slow down on 31st. Slow down on Rock Island. Get everybody home.

At approximately 4:34 p.m., Lauderhill Police officers located a stolen vehicle in the area of 6400 W. Oakland Park Blvd and Officers attempted a felony stop.

The stolen vehicle subsequently crashed into another vehicle in the area of 7200 Inverrary Blvd. West. The driver of the other vehicle sustained minor injuries.

Following the crash, five juvenile occupants fled from the vehicle on foot. After a brief foot pursuit,all five juveniles were taken into custody. 🚔

We handed our Youth Academy students a crime scene and told them to work it.

Crime Scene Technicians Zimmerman and Clark built a full mock scene for this summer's Youth Academy — then walked our students through processing it the same way our unit does on a real call. How to approach a scene without contaminating it. How to lift a latent print. How to photograph, collect, and document evidence so it holds up later.

For context, our Crime Scene Unit responded to 8 scenes in July, recovered 60 DNA swabs and 4 latent prints, and submitted 5 DNA cases to the BSO lab. Six DNA reports came back last month on cases dating as far back as 2017 — which is its own lesson for a fourteen-year-old to hear. This work doesn't expire.

A few of these students are going to remember this summer when they're deciding what to do with their lives. That's the whole point.

🚲 A bike light costs about $12. Please go buy one.

Our Traffic Unit spent part of July focused on pedestrian and bicycle safety, including a micromobility pop-up at Lauderhill Mall highlighting bikes, scooters, and the e-devices we see throughout our community every day.

Here’s why it matters: Florida law requires bicycles ridden between sunset and sunrise to have a white front light visible from 500 feet, along with a red reflector and red light on the rear visible from 600 feet.

That’s not just about following the law — it’s about being seen.

On a dark stretch of Broward Boulevard or State Road 7, a rider without proper lighting can be nearly invisible to a driver until it’s too late. At 45 mph, there may be no time to react.

Our officers stop unlit riders regularly. Nobody enjoys that stop. We’d much rather see you with a light and safely on your way.

Drivers, we need you too:
* Slow down on busy corridors.
* Look twice at intersections.
* Watch carefully for people walking and riding after dark.
* Assume someone may be there, even when you don’t immediately see them.

And to our students riding to school this year: front light, rear reflector, helmet — and please walk your bike across the crosswalk.

A $12 light can make a life-saving difference.

If someone calls saying they're from your bank's fraud department, hang up and call the number on the back of your card.

Our detectives are seeing a scheme that works like this: a caller poses as a representative from a real, well-known bank. They tell the victim their account has been compromised. They sound calm, professional, and urgent all at once. Then they instruct the victim to withdraw cash, or to hand over a debit card, so the "compromised" funds can be secured.

A courier — sometimes a rideshare driver who has no idea what they're carrying — shows up at the door to collect it.
These schemes target older adults specifically, and they cross state lines.

Lauderhill detectives have worked cases connected to victims hundreds of miles from here.

Here is what banks do not do:
❌ They do not send anyone to your home to collect cash or cards
❌ They do not ask you to withdraw money to "protect" it
❌ They do not ask for your PIN, your full account number, or a code texted to your phone
❌ They do not tell you to keep the call secret from your family

If you get a call like this: HANG UP. Don't press a number, don't stay on the line to argue. Call your bank directly using the number printed on your card or statement — not a number the caller gives you.
Then call us at 954-764-4357. Even if you didn't lose money, the report helps.

And if you have a parent or grandparent in Lauderhill — send them this. That conversation before the call comes is worth more than anything we can do afterward.
