Today, Dr. Phil Bulone and Paul Jaquith, CEO of Mental Health America of Southeast Florida, accepted the Community Champion Award from Memorial Healthcare System, recognizing the work being done to serve and support our community.
During today’s celebration, an important message was shared: our health is influenced by so much more than medical care alone. It is shaped by our circumstances, our access to resources, our relationships, our environment, and whether we have people willing to show up when we need them most.
That message speaks directly to the heart of the LOSS Team.
After a death by su***de, we don’t wait for grieving families to figure out where to turn for help. We go to them.
LOSS Team members respond in the community, make home visits, connect survivors with resources and ongoing support, and offer something that can be especially powerful in the aftermath of su***de loss: the presence of someone who understands.
Postvention is about meeting people where they are—sometimes literally—and helping create a bridge from an unimaginable moment toward connection, support, and hope.
We are deeply grateful to Memorial Healthcare System for recognizing Mental Health America of Southeast Florida and the LOSS Team as Community Champions, and for recognizing the importance of work that extends beyond traditional healthcare and into the lives and homes of the people who need it.
Congratulations to Dr. Phil Bulone, Paul Jaquith, and every member of the LOSS Team and Mental Health America of Southeast Florida who helps make this work possible.
This award may have been accepted by two people today, but it represents a community of people committed to one simple promise:

Yesterday, the LOSS Team was honored to join Dr. Phil Bulone and the City of Coral Springs as the City officially proclaimed September 2026 as Su***de Awareness Month.
The proclamation recognized those we have lost to su***de, those who have survived su***de attempts, su***de loss survivors, and the individuals and organizations dedicated to su***de prevention and support within our communities.
The LOSS Team was especially grateful for the opportunity to bring attention to the importance of postvention and the critical role it plays within su***de prevention.
Su***de awareness and prevention extend beyond recognizing warning signs. They also mean ensuring that when a su***de occurs, the people left behind are met with compassion, connection, resources, and support during some of the most difficult moments of their lives.
Postvention reminds us that our responsibility to a community does not end after a loss. It means showing up for survivors in the immediate aftermath, connecting them with meaningful support, reducing isolation, and continuing to walk alongside them as they navigate life after su***de loss.
We are grateful to Dr. Phil Bulone for recognizing the work of the LOSS Team and to the City of Coral Springs for its continued commitment to mental health, su***de awareness, prevention, and postvention.
As we enter Su***de Awareness Month, may we remember that awareness is only the beginning. Prevention requires education, conversation, connection, compassion, and action—and postvention must remain part of that conversation. 💙

🌟 Voices of Recovery Initiative: Understanding Schizophrenia, Recovery & Hope 🌟

What an incredible journey we have shared so far through the Voices of Recovery Initiative!

✅ Session 1: Understanding Schizophrenia Beyond the Basics Participants explored myths versus facts, gained a deeper understanding of schizophrenia, learned about symptom categories, and discovered why recovery is possible. The conversations were insightful, educational, and empowering.

✅ Session 2: Understanding Symptoms & Early Warning Signs We were honored to feature guest presenter Deanne O'Brien, LMHC, who provided valuable education on positive, negative, and cognitive symptoms while helping participants recognize early warning signs and the importance of early intervention. The session was filled with meaningful discussion, creativity, and raw passion as participants expressed themselves through art that will become part of our final exhibition in December.

The engagement, courage, and hope shared by participants continue to inspire all of us. Through education, storytelling, lived experience, and creative expression, we are building a stronger and more compassionate community.

The Voices of Recovery Initiative is a free six-part community workshop series presented by 9Muses Art Center in partnership with Mental Health America of Southeast Florida and community behavioral health leaders. Together, we are working to increase understanding, reduce stigma, promote recovery, and strengthen support for individuals, families, caregivers, and community members impacted by schizophrenia.

Andrea, Beverly, Donna and Melodi were at The Power and Healing Back to School Event at James Hunt Elementary yesterday, Aug. 7. People wanted to know where the Early Voting sites were since early voting starts today, Aug. 8. Use https://www.vote411.org/ballot to learn about the candidates on your ballot. We were also promoting Gun Violence Prevention with our Lock It Up! program of free gun locks.

Will Tomorrow Forgive? is a moving short film created by 9Muses Art Center, inspired by real-life stories of recovery and resilience from individuals who have navigated mental health and substance use challenges firsthand.

Blending personal testimony, performance, and historical reflection, the film examines a difficult question: How much has our mental health system truly changed? Across generations, people experiencing mental health crises have often encountered the same cycle of hospitalization, medication, institutionalization, and incarceration, frequently without the long-term support needed for meaningful recovery.

Through the voices of peer specialists, advocates, artists, and survivors, Will Tomorrow Forgive? explores the humanity behind diagnosis and treatment. The film reveals the courage, humor, setbacks, and triumphs that define recovery while challenging audiences to reconsider society's assumptions about mental illness and wellness.

At once honest, thought-provoking, and hopeful, this community-driven production invites viewers to look beyond stigma and toward a future where lived experience is valued, recovery is possible, and systems of care are transformed through compassion, dignity, and connection.

Yesterday, our LOSS Team had the privilege of tabling at Hope Starts Here at Nova Southeastern University, where we connected with incredible community members and organizations dedicated to advancing mental health awareness and su***de awareness throughout Broward County.

We were also honored to hear from Dr. Phil Bulone, whose remarks reinforced the importance of collaboration and building a community where people feel supported and connected.

Throughout the day, we had the opportunity to share resources, meet amazing community partners, and engage in meaningful conversations about how we can work together to increase awareness and ensure individuals and families know that support is available.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by our table, to the event organizers for bringing our community together, AFSP Southeast Florida Chapter, and to all of our partners who continue to make a difference every day. We look forward to strengthening these connections and continuing this important work together. 💙

Dr. Phil Bulone and Carolina Ossorio had the privilege of speaking with students at Miami Dade College about grief, su***de loss, healing, and resilience. ❤️

Creating space for honest conversations about su***de loss is something that means so much to both of us. Grief can often feel isolating, but connection, understanding, and compassion remind us that we do not have to carry it alone.

We were grateful for the opportunity to share our personal and professional experiences, engage in meaningful discussions, and explore how creative expression can support healing. Seeing students participate so openly and thoughtfully gave us hope for the future and for the communities they will serve.

Thank you to Miami Dade College, the faculty, and all of the students who helped make this experience so meaningful. Every conversation that reduces stigma and increases understanding has the power to make a difference.
