At Detroit Premier Academy, Student Support Coordinator Paige Walker is making mental health a priority for our girls! Creating a safe space for open conversations, Paige uses the book Brave to talk about coping strategies and building confidence, sparking real conversations about emotional wellness.

Paige has witnessed amazing growth, students are not only learning to manage their mental health, but are also creating a supportive space for one another.

We’re so proud of Paige and our DPA girls for breaking the stigma, supporting one another, and showing that mental health matters.

🍦 May is Mental Health Awareness Month!🍦

This month, Communities In Schools of Michigan is proud to spotlight the incredible work of our clinical team (Rachel von Pagels and Nyekah Guest) who led three impactful workshops in collaboration with our Student Support Coordinators at Pennfield High School, Dunlap Elementary, and North Pennfield Elementary in Pennfield Schools.

Over 29 students participated in interactive sessions focused on understanding emotions and building self-esteem. Students enjoyed ice cream sundaes while talking about self-worth and mental health.

We were inspired by the thoughtful responses, active participation, and the supportive, respectful environment they created together.

This is what Mental Health Awareness Month is all about: breaking the stigma, having real conversations, and supporting one another. Thank you to our amazing team and students for making these workshops a success!

🇺🇸 On Memorial Day, CIS of Michigan honors and remembers the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. Their sacrifice allows us to pursue education, and community with freedom and hope.

Today, we pause to reflect on their legacy and express our gratitude. We also recognize the families and loved ones who carry their memories forward.

May their courage inspire us to support one another, build stronger communities, and work together for a brighter future.
Wishing everyone a meaningful Memorial Day.

🌟 Celebrating Our Outstanding Students! 🌟

Three incredible TCEC students supported by CIS of Michigan Student Support Coordinator Haïette Merchi-Magueramane and TCEC staff were recently recognized at the 46th Annual Jack & Annette Aronson Youth Recognition Awards, held at University High School in Ferndale Public Schools.

Deondre, Kam, and Malik were honored for more than just their achievements—they were celebrated for their resilience, growth, and determination to overcome challenges. We’re especially proud of our seniors, Deondre and Malik, who each received the David Michael Smith Memorial Scholarship. This award, created by Dianna and Loyd Smith in memory of their son David, recognizes students who exemplify perseverance and character.

Even as a fully virtual student, Deondre made it a point to attend and connect with community leaders—including Ferndale Public Schools Superintendent Hibler, Ferndale Mayor Leaks-May, and Ferndale Youth Assistance’s Collins and Wallace (Ms. Jessie)—who all offered words of encouragement.

A special thank you to Ferndale Youth Assistance, the Smith family, and all our partners for making this celebration possible. When students feel seen and supported, they truly shine. We are so proud of you, Deondre, Kam, and Malik—your futures are bright!

🌏 May is Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month! 🌺

Here at CIS of Michigan we are proud to celebrate and honor the vibrant cultures, stories and remarkable achievements, of Americans with roots in Asia, Melanesia, Micronesia, and Polynesia.

This month, we uplift AAPI leaders, past and present, who’ve shaped our communities and our nation.

• Grace Lee Boggs – Detroit’s own legendary activist, philosopher, and civil rights leader, whose work empowered generations to fight for justice and equity.
• Fred Korematsu – Civil rights icon who bravely challenged Japanese American internment during WWII and advocated for justice throughout his life.
• Dalip Singh Saund – The first Asian American, Indian American, and Sikh elected to the U.S. Congress, paving the way for greater representation.
• Kalpana Chawla – Astronaut and engineer, she was the first woman of Indian origin to travel to space, showing young people the sky is not the limit.
• Patsy Mink – The first woman of color and Asian-American in Congress and co-author of Title IX, who opened doors for women and girls in education and sports.
• Yo-Yo Ma – World-renowned cellist and humanitarian, using music to connect cultures and inspire hope around the globe.

We encourage our community to join us in learning, celebrating, and uplifting the AAPI community—not just in May, but all year long.
