We’re thrilled to celebrate the success of the Zumba Club at TCEC 💃 Over seven weeks during the 6th hour lab, students joined Penny Love Fitness to explore how movement can be a powerful tool for self-esteem and stress relief. The program kicked off with open conversations and info on substance use prevention, while each session wrapped up with positive messages of self-love and self-care. 💖

This school year, Communities In Schools of Michigan strengthened its partnership with Pennfield Schools by building deeper relationships with students, families, staff, and community members. Thanks to generous support from the Battle Creek Community Foundation, our Student Support Coordinators expanded basic needs assistance across the entire district.

We recognize the challenges families face during summer, and our team—alongside dedicated community partners—assembled and distributed around 180 backpacks filled with hygiene essentials like shampoo, deodorant, and hand sanitizer, plus 80 food kits assembled to help supplement family pantries. Each of the 38 families received a backpack for every student and groceries to take home. We are committed to providing Pennfield students and families with resources, stability, and peace of mind all year long.

The event was a powerful reminder of what can be accomplished when a community works together. We are incredibly grateful to our community partners, donors, and supporters who helped make this event possible.

Thank you United States Steel Corporation for your partnership and support of students in Dearborn Public Schools! Students at Maples Elementary School now have an enhanced space in Mrs. Bazzi’s room to recenter and process so they can return to learning.

Every student deserves an environment where they can learn, grow and succeed.

Recently, U. S. Steel employees partnered with Communities In Schools of Michigan to provide a sensory wall for students at Maple Elementary School in Dearborn near our Great Lakes Works. The sensory wall is designed to support focus, comfort and engagement while helping create a more inclusive learning environment.

It was a true honor for our Student Support Coordinator, Kevin Sanders, to speak words of encouragement to young leaders in Pontiac School District. He started his day speaking to the graduating class of 5th graders at Walt Whitman Elementary. Kevin gave a message that encouraged students to speak positive words about themselves, find multiple reasons every day to celebrate something they have accomplished, and most of all, understand that they are surrounded by people who celebrate their success. Seeing the engagement from families, parents, and students made this event truly special.

Later that day, Kevin had the privilege of returning to his own office at Pontiac Middle School, where he addressed eighth-graders who were graduating to high school, students he had once supported as sixth-graders. He talked to the students about successfully overcoming challenges. This message allowed Kevin to share the realities of walking into new spaces, especially as these students prepare to enter their first year of high school. It was a proud moment to be in this room celebrating the students he had supported over the years, from offering snacks and socks to providing school supplies, a listening ear, and an open heart.

On behalf of Communities In Schools of Michigan, we are incredibly proud to walk alongside Pontiac students, families, and staff through every milestone and new beginning. Together, we’re building a community where every student feels seen, supported, and inspired to reach their full potential. We look forward to continuing this important work.

As the school year wraps up, Communities In Schools of Michigan is celebrating the power of community and opportunity for Fordson High School students in Dearborn Public Schools! Thanks to generous support from Ally our recent EL Career Fair gave over 100 students valuable exposure to post-graduation pathways, from colleges and career training programs to local businesses and community organizations. Students connected with representatives, explored options for their futures, and gathered resources to help them confidently plan their next steps, all in a supportive, welcoming environment (plus, great food!).

We’re proud to help empower Fordson students with information, inspiration, and connections as they look ahead to life beyond high school.

🎓 As graduation season arrives, Communities In Schools of Michigan is celebrating the hard work, resilience, and determination of seniors across our district. This year, during our first partnership with Pennfield Schools, we had the privilege of supporting students like Brian. When Brian transferred to Pennfield High School as a junior, he faced significant challenges: no high school credits, a new city, and needing a fresh start. From day one, Brian was determined to become a first generation high school graduate.

Through unwavering commitment—balancing in-person and virtual classes, recovering credits, and keeping his eye on the future—Brian not only caught up but inspired those around him. He encouraged classmates, supported friends, and cultivated teamwork. In just two years, he completed four years’ worth of coursework. Now, Brian is preparing to walk across the stage this May, looking ahead to college and a future in photography.

Brian’s journey is a testament to the power of resilience, hope, and the impact of student-centered support. We’re so proud of Brian and all the graduating seniors who show us what’s possible when students have a community behind them.
The future is bright!
