The answer to yesterday’s trivia question: Conrad L. Mallett, Jr. The Society was honored that Chief Justice Mallett joined us for our annual luncheon in 2025. In fact, we had three former Chief Justices join us: Marilyn J. Kelly, Maura D. Corrigan, and Conrad L. Mallett.

On this day in 1775, the Colonists and British Regulars fought in the Battle of Bunker Hill, just outside Boston. After this Battle, Massachusetts-native (and future justice on the Michigan Territorial Court) James Witherell enlisted in the Colonial Army.

The Society has been enjoying the frequent posts of swearing-in ceremonies of the February 2026 bar exam passers. Congratulations!

In our archives collection, we have a “Certificate of Admission as an Attorney” from the Civil War era! On March 22, 1862, before Judge Edward Lawrence and Clerk Robert Barry of the Washtenaw County Circuit Court, Andrew McEvoy of Ann Arbor was “admitted and licensed to practice” as an attorney.
