On October 13, 2026, the Greenfield Fire Department was dispatched on the initial first alarm for a working structure fire with reported entrapment in Turners Falls.

Due to the timing of the incident, our on-duty crew had just completed shift change, making the previous shift immediately available to respond. This allowed Greenfield to send Engine 3 and Ladder 1 without delay, providing additional resources during a critical time. Chief Strahan and Captain Kimball responded to assist with incident management as well. It was Day 1 for our newest hire who was riding with the Captain. This was his first call and he was able to observe and gain valuable knowledge about fire scene operations.

Upon arrival, Turners Falls Fire Department firefighters had already initiated an exterior fire attack. Greenfield Engine 3 deployed a second cross-lay hose and joined Turners Falls members in advancing an interior attack. A primary search was conducted simultaneously as crews worked to expose and extinguish the remaining fire.

Ladder 1’s crew was assigned to the outside ventilation (OV) role. Using ground ladders and chainsaws, firefighters opened the roof to ventilate the heavy black smoke that had accumulated inside the structure and expose fire extending into the cockloft.

We are thankful that the homeowner was able to self-extricate from the building. We also wish the firefighter who sustained a minor injury a speedy recovery.

The Greenfield Fire Department is proud to support our neighboring communities through mutual aid agreements.

Last weekend, Greenfield firefighters trained in the skill of drafting water from a static source using a portable drop tank. This equipment essentially serves as a temporary pool, allowing fire departments to establish a reliable water supply in areas where hydrants are unavailable.

Tankers and other apparatus can deliver water to the drop tank while an engine drafts from it to supply hose lines during a structure fire. This operation is especially important in rural areas and locations where a dependable water supply may not be readily accessible.

While the City of Greenfield has an extensive network of fire hydrants, practicing these skills ensures our firefighters are prepared to establish a water supply wherever the need arises. Maintaining proficiency in these operations is essential to effective fireground operations and protecting our community.

Alongside this training, the Greenfield Fire Department also hosted the Basic Six program, a six-Saturday course designed to teach volunteer firefighters the fundamental skills needed to operate safely and effectively on the fireground.

Greenfield firefighters contribute to this program as instructors, providing hands-on demonstrations, practical skills training, and classroom instruction to help prepare firefighters from departments throughout the region.

Both efforts highlight the Greenfield Fire Department’s commitment not only to training our own members, but also to supporting neighboring departments and strengthening the quality of emergency services throughout Franklin County.

On October 1, 2026, the Greenfield Fire Department responded to a reported fire involving an electric vehicle charging station. The unit was in the process of being dismantled and removed as part of a larger project to replace multiple charging stations on the property.

Upon arrival, Greenfield firefighters confirmed the situation and coordinated with the power company to verify that the unit was safely disconnected from all electrical sources before proceeding. Once an all-clear was provided, firefighters worked to extinguish the fire while notifying nearby residents to shelter in place due to smoke in the area.

It was determined that this particular charging station had a large lithium ion battery storage system internally. During the removal process the battery entered thermal runaway which makes extinguishment a challenge.

Massachusetts DEP was requested to assist with the environmental assessment and with contracting a cleanup contractor to safely remove and properly dispose of the damaged charging station. In the meantime, firefighters established a fire watch to monitor the unit and ensure conditions remained safe until the contractor arrived.

We thank Turners Falls Fire Department for assisting, alongside Bernardston Fire Department for providing station coverage while our on-duty and off-duty firefighters worked on scene.

Mid-afternoon Monday, Greenfield Dispatch received a 911 call reporting an appliance fire inside a residential home on Lincoln Street. Greenfield firefighters were dispatched and arrived to find heavy smoke conditions coming from the rear of the structure.

Car 4 arrived on scene and provided an initial size-up, confirming a working fire. Engine 3 and Ladder 1 arrived shortly after, establishing a water supply and stretching a hose line to the rear of the building. A second hose line was brought in the front side of the home. Crews located a fire in the kitchen and quickly knocked down the flames before beginning overhaul operations. Off-duty Greenfield firefighters responded and brought other apparatus to assist with additional man-power.

Due to the fire's location and the building's construction, firefighters used their knowledge of building construction and fire behavior to check for extension into other areas of the home. Crews inspected concealed spaces and common pathways for fire and heat to ensure the fire had not spread beyond the initial area. Chief Strahan and Deputy Chief McIver assumed command of the incident.

Thankfully, the homeowners were able to safely exit the building, with working smoke detectors providing an early warning as the fire developed. This incident serves as another reminder of the importance of having working smoke detectors in your home.

We thank our mutual aid partners for their response and support in helping manage this incident. We also recognize Greenfield Dispatch and Shelburne Control Dispatch for their professionalism in receiving the initial 911 call, dispatching resources, and coordinating communications throughout the incident. Also thanking Greenfield Police Department for providing traffic control to keep the road clear for firefighters to work safely.

Working smoke detectors save lives. Make sure yours are installed, tested regularly, and functioning properly.

Yesterday afternoon, Greenfield firefighters were initially requested as mutual aid station coverage for Turners Falls Fire Department while their crews responded to reports of smoke in a structure in Montague Center.

As the incident developed, Engine 3 and its crew were diverted to the scene, joining firefighters from Montague Center Fire Department - Inc. 1941, and numerous other departments working together to safely navigate a stubborn fire and the challenges presented by the building.

We would like to thank Bernardston Fire Department for sending an engine to assist, as well as Brattleboro Fire Department for providing an engine to help cover the area during the second portion of the incident.

Fires like this highlight one of the unique challenges of the fire service: firefighters are routinely called into a wide variety of structures and occupancies—from workshops and commercial buildings to jails, homes, nursing facilities, warehouses, restaurants, and storefronts.

Often, crews arrive with limited information about the building’s layout, the location and extent of the fire, or the hazards presented by utilities and building construction. Once inside, conditions can change rapidly.

This is where training, experience, communication, and mutual aid become critical.

Firefighters from different departments bring their knowledge and experience together, working as one team to overcome difficult conditions and protect the people and communities we serve.

Yesterday, the Greenfield Fire Department hosted its annual September 11th Ceremony. Members of our department and community gathered to remember, honor, and reflect on one of the fire service’s most tragic days.

Twenty-five years later, the events of September 11, 2001, continue to affect families across America. Whether through the loss of a loved one, illnesses related to the attacks, or the cancers and other occupational illnesses suffered by those exposed to the aftermath of the towers collapsing, the impact continues to be felt.

Even today, names are added to the FDNY World Trade Center Memorial Wall in New York City. We stand in remembrance of those who gave so much in the most extraordinary circumstances, and those who continue to pay the price for their service.

During yesterday’s ceremony, a FDNY flag was raised in conjunction with the ringing of the bell — a solemn fire service tradition announcing a firefighter’s “Last Alarm.”

We remember the fallen. We honor the survivors. We stand with the families who continue to carry the weight of that day.

All are welcome to join us tomorrow morning for a small ceremony at 10:00am to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice on 9/11/2001, and since then, from the aftermath that followed.

A recent day of ladder training focused on the importance of knowing the operating limits, ranges, and capabilities of our 107’ aerial ladder.

Operating a ladder truck goes far beyond positioning for a structure fire. Our members train to understand how and when the aerial can be utilized in a variety of situations—including technical rescue and elevated rescue operation where proper placement, communication, and decision-making can make all the difference.

Training days like this are just a small glimpse into the many skills we continuously rotate through and practice. Each session is an opportunity to fine-tune our decision-making, build confidence in our equipment, and strengthen our ability to operate safely and effectively when our community needs us most.
