School's out and we know what that means in our city-kids jumping off of our bridges. Generally speaking, we get it, we would probably be doing the same thing if we were their ages. Over the past few days, however, we have had several calls from residents who live near these bridges. They are calling because the kids are being rude, swearing, playing loud and vulgar music, etc. They are gathering in large groups in and around the various bridges and the kayak launch while obstructing vehicular traffic and sometimes using private property to get out of the water after they jump in. Our officers have responded multiple times to disperse the kids, which is our preferred method of handling these calls. Often, we have encountered the same kids on multiple occasions after they have been dispersed. For the most part, when we get these calls, we generally tell the kids to move on, however, it has come to a point where we may have to start writing civil infraction citations to the kids for jumping/diving off of the bridge under Gibraltar ordinance 22-132, which does carry a $50 fine. The kayak launch is also for kayak's only, not a swimming platform. Please have a conversation with your child/children about these issues not only for the peace of the residents who live near these bridges, but for their own safety-how many of these kids actually check the other side of the bridge to make sure there aren't any boats coming as they jump off?
