Please be advised that there is a scam going around where someone either calls and/or texts you that you missed a court date and then demands money to alleviate some of the fine. They will send you a text with a picture showing a fake court subpoena with your name on it and threaten you with arrest by the sheriff's office or some other agency if you don't pay. The scammer's preferred method of payment is usually cryptocurrency and they will direct you to a crypto ATM with a QR code to make this payment. This is 100% a scam and you should hang up immediately. We are putting this out there because we have taken several calls recently, including 2 of them today, involving this same type of scam.
Please share this with your elderly neighbors/family and those who might be a little more vulnerable. If you receive a call that you suspect is a scam, you are always welcome to call us here and speak to an officer. The scammer's (often calling from different countries) change their tactics, so always be mindful of anyone asking you for money, personal information, threatening you with arrest, telling you that a family member is in jail and they need money, etc. I can speak for most, if not all police departments, that we don't take cryptocurrency, we don't communicate with you through text, and if we plan on arresting you, we don't usually give you a call or text advising you of our plans.
Have a great night and feel free to visit this website for additional information or to report a suspected scam/fraud (side note, this website also includes the donotcall.gov link for all those annoying solicitors): https://reportfraud.ftc.gov/
