Hold a favorite book upside down or start reading it backwards. Talk about what is wrong with the way you are holding the book.

Holding a book correctly builds print awareness, teaching children that print carries meaning, follows a direction, and has a physical structure.

3 Months: Grasping or batting at the book/pages.

6–12 Months: Sitting steady, mouthing, and grabbing/pounding pages.

12–18 Months: Holding board books independently and turning thick pages.

18–24 Months: Holding books right-side up and turning single pages more intentionally
