Aurora Double-Shooting Suspect Captured by US Marshals Fugitive Task Force in Denver

The U.S. Marshals Service Colorado Violent Offender Task Force arrested 49-year-old Michael Smith in Denver on Tuesday. Smith is wanted by the Aurora Police Department on a felony warrant for attempted first-degree murder in connection with a May 31, 2024 shooting near a 7-Eleven at 15296 E. Hampden Ave. in Aurora that injured two bystanders, including a child. He is also wanted by the U.S. Marshals Service and Federal Bureau of Prisons after walking away from a halfway house without authorization in April 2021 while serving a federal sentence.

After APD requested assistance in January 2026, task force members conducted an extensive investigation, including search warrants and associate interviews, to locate Smith.

On Tuesday, members of the task force, including officers from the Englewood Police Department, developed information that led them to Smith’s location near 14th and Milwaukee streets in Denver, where he was safely taken into custody.

This arrest was the result of a collaborative effort between the Aurora Police Department, U.S. Marshals Service Colorado Violent Offender Task Force, Colorado Bureau of Investigation, Englewood Police Department, Colorado Department of Corrections, and Boulder County Sheriff’s Office.
