BEWARE! A dark spider with red or orange markings on its abdomen is very likely a member of the genus Latrodectus, otherwise known as widow spiders. (Note that some may appear brown, not necessarily truly black.) These spiders are venomous, as opposed to poisonous. Venomous organisms are those that can inject venom, whereas poisonous organisms can make you sick if you eat them. Widow spiders are found on every continent except Antarctica. This one looks to be Latrodectus hesperus or the western widow spider. We spotted it at Desert Discovery Camps at Franklin Mountains State Park this summer!

The Wakeem/Teschner Nature Preserve (Resler Canyon) is so green right now. If you have not visited in a while, now is the time to check out the trails!

Please keep your pets on a leash. This is the rule to use the private nature preserve and is in place to keep your pet safe but also keeps the animals that live in preserve safe.

Happy National Reptile Awareness Day! We want to introduce you to a lizard you may see often in our Chihuahuan Desert: Crotaphytus collaris, or the common collared lizard. Like all reptiles, they are ectothermic, which means that they rely on environmental factors to regulate their body temperature. (Mammals are endothermic, meaning we are able to maintain our body temperature regardless of the temperature around us.) This individual was photographed during the summer breeding season, when male coloration is particularly bright. You may have seen Crotaphytus collaris performing what look like “push-ups” as a way to attract mates and communicate their dominance to other individuals.
