Dyersburg Police Department Launches Public Safety Awareness Campaign on 911 Misuse

Dyersburg, TN — [Insert Date] — The Dyersburg Police Department has initiated a Public Safety Awareness Campaign to educate citizens about the growing issues of unintentional 911 calls, hang-up calls, and the intentional abuse of emergency services.

Each 911 call—whether accidental or deliberate—requires a response from both the Public Safety Communications Center and the Police Department. These unnecessary calls divert critical resources and can delay responses to genuine emergencies, creating a significant public safety concern.

“Every call to 911 is treated as an emergency until proven otherwise,” said Thomas Langford, Chief of Police. “When dispatchers and officers must respond to accidental or prank calls, it takes time and attention away from people who truly need help.”

To help reduce accidental 911 calls, the department encourages residents to follow these preventive measures:

How to Avoid Accidental 911 Calls

• Lock your phone: Use a passcode or screen lock to prevent accidental touches while your phone is in a pocket, purse, or bag.
• Know your Emergency SOS shortcut: Learn how your phone activates Emergency SOS to avoid triggering it unintentionally.
• Check your settings: Review your phone’s Emergency SOS options and understand which buttons or gestures automatically call 911.
• Avoid pressure on side buttons: Be mindful when carrying your phone against your body or other objects.
• Keep your phone updated: Install software updates that may improve emergency call features.
• Check before storing: Ensure your screen is locked and no buttons are pressed before placing your phone away.
• Teach children: Explain that 911 is for emergencies only and should never be used for play.
• If you accidentally call 911: Stay on the line and inform the dispatcher that the call was accidental—do not hang up. This helps confirm there is no emergency.

Key Reminder

Emergency SOS features are designed to save lives in a crisis. Understanding how your device works helps you avoid accidental activation while ensuring you can use it effectively when you truly need help.

For non emergency situations, citizens are reminded to call 311.
