Alabama has submitted its major disaster declaration request and supporting documentation to FEMA - but we aren't done working! Damage assessments continue and new information will be added to the request as necessary. We don't know if, when, how much or what type(s) of federal assistance will be approved. When we know, you'll know.

There are two primary types of federal aid - IA and PA. IA is Individual Assistance. People can apply for this assistance.

PA is Public Assistance; it is available to help local governments and certain non-profits cover eligible expenses. There are multiple categories of PA.

Hazard mitigation grants and SBA loans are also sometimes made available by FEMA after a disaster, depending on the circumstances.

Each disaster is different and the application and approval process are different each time, too.

We are doing everything in our power to put Alabama in the best possible position to receive this much-needed federal assistance. You can help, too - report any hurricane-related damage to your county EMA office. Reporting damage doesn't guarantee that our request will be approved, but it helps strengthen Alabama's case.

If you have a communication disability, consider carrying printed cards or storing information on your devices during a disaster to inform first responders and others how to communicate with you.

Governor Kay Ivey has requested a major disaster declaration, asking FEMA to help cover eligible hurricane-related costs for governments & certain non-profits.

The request also seeks individual assistance which, if approved, could provide direct support to affected households.

Social engineering and phishing tactics are still some of the most effective ways hackers gain access. Common signs of phishing include a peculiar sender address, a sense of urgency in the request, and prompting users to click a link.

Be suspicious of links and unknown contacts.

🌪️ Tornado season in Alabama runs from November into May. While the number and severity of tornadoes varies year to year, preparation is non-negotiable. Is your safety plan ready?

Key things to consider:

1️⃣ Determine your safe place before stormy weather. Examples: windowless interior room on the lowest floor, interior stairwell, basement, designated community shelter or safer place, and similar.

2️⃣ Have multiple reliable ways to receive weather alerts, including while asleep! Examples: NOAA Weather Radio, push alerts from media and/or your county emergency management, reliable weather apps., WEA (Wireless Emergency Alerts), and friends and family.

3️⃣ Have a kit that includes essentials such as flashlights, whistle, first-aid kit, sturdy shoes, helmets, and bulky blankets.
