The Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries (ADAI) is encouraging specialty crop producers across the state to report any crop damage from the recent freeze to their local USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA) county office. These reports are critical in evaluating potential assistance and determining whether a federal disaster declaration may be warranted.

For more information or to report damage, producers should contact their local USDA FSA office. They can be located at https://www.farmers.gov/working-with-us/service-center-locator.

On March 16, 2026, Alabama experienced severe weather whiplash, dropping from near to below-freezing temperatures with snow in some areas. Highs on Monday were in the upper 30s north to 50s south, with overnight lows plunging into the mid-20s to lower 30s, causing widespread freeze warnings and potential damage to the Chilton County peach crop. Farmers in Chilton County utilized wind machines and fires in the orchards to mix warmer air with freezing air near the ground to protect peach crops from frost on or around March 16. Despite the mid-March freeze, local farmers hope for a good overall season for Alabama peaches in 2026. Please keep our farmers in your prayers during this time.
