"Every child needs a safe place to fall–a place where he or she can explore things without worrying about failure and judgment. A library is one of those places."―Bill Harley

“When we combine the comfort of a community center with the guidance of library staff, our youngest kids learn and grow in library programs such as Trick-or-Reading."

The program was full at 30 children, not including their families or caregivers, for the annual Lil’ Trick-or-Reading program at the Vernon Area Public Library on Oct. 23 in Lincolnshire.

"The first law of library science, published 95 years ago by librarian Dr. S. R. Ranganathan, is that Books are for Use. Public libraries are not repositories or museums. Library staff are not gatekeepers, protecting the books inside from the hands of the people who want them. Rather, we protect the rights of those people to seek the books they want, for any reason they want. Books are meant to be borrowed and enjoyed and shared."

For our Women’s Voices series, commentator Noelle Thompson tells us a well-curated library should always be showing signs of use.
