In 1905 a boggy pine flat north of Houston became the biggest oil field in Texas, and the little town sitting on it lent its name to a company that eventually turned into Exxon. 🛢️

The place was called Humble, after a settler named Pleasant Humble who had run the ferry and the post office there. In January 1905 a well came in, and by the end of that year the field was outproducing everything else in the state. The problem was the ground. It was low, wet pine and oak bottom, so crews worked off plank walkways with standing water between the derrick legs and the crude held in open earthen pits.

Six years later a group of operators who had made their money in that mud formed a company in Houston and named it Humble Oil and Refining, after the field. One of them, Ross Sterling, went on to build a refinery at Baytown that became one of the largest in the world. Standard Oil of New Jersey bought into Humble in 1919, and the long chain of mergers that followed ends at the company everybody knows today. ⚙️

The field kept producing for decades. The town is a Houston suburb now, with a shopping mall sitting on the north end of it.

A muddy pine bottom ended up naming the biggest oil company in the country.
