Cheyenne, Wyo. – A C-130H Hercules aircraft assigned to the Wyoming Air National Guard’s 153rd Airlift Wing was activated on Aug. 10, 2025, to support wildland firefighting operations across the western United States.
This aircraft is equipped with Modular Airborne Firefighting System (MAFFS) and crewed by Airmen specifically trained to fight wildfires. This aircraft is currently positioned at Mesa Gateway Airport in Mesa, Arizona, along with another C-130 from the California Air National Guard’s 146th Airlift Wing.
Since the beginning of the activation, MAFFS 3 has flown a total of nine sorties and performed nine drops totaling 25,421 gallons of fire suppressant on fires in Arizona near Payson and Sedona, and on fires in New Mexico near Mayberry and Albuquerque.
The aircraft and crews operate under the coordination of the MAFFS Air Expeditionary Group (AEG), which oversees aerial firefighting missions for all participating units.
“The MAFFS community is a uniquely capable program with over 50 years of experience that is always ready to support our wildland firefighting agency partners when called upon,” said Col. T.J. Gagnon, Wyoming Air National Guard’s Liaison Officer, and this year’s commander of the MAFFS Air Expeditionary Group.
The C-130s, outfitted with MAFFS II systems, can discharge up to 3,000 gallons of fire retardant in under 10 seconds, covering a swath one-quarter mile long. Crews can deliver the entire load in a single pass or make multiple, targeted drops.
In addition to Wyoming, and California, two aircraft are operating from the Colorado Springs Airtanker Base in Colorado, provided by the Air Force Reserve Command’s 302nd Airlift Wing at Peterson Space Force Base, Colorado, and the Nevada Air National Guard’s 152nd Airlift Wing in Reno, Nevada.
The MAFFS program provides a critical surge capability during peak wildfire activity, supplementing the national airtanker fleet when commercial assets are fully committed. This is the second MAFFS activation that the Wyoming Air National Guard has participated in this year. Wyoming was previously activated in January to combat fires near Los Angeles, California.
