What Do Your Local Taxes Support?

W**d & Pest

Local tax revenue helps fund w**d and pest districts that monitor infestations, coordinate treatment, employ trained personnel, maintain equipment, and work with landowners to manage invasive species.

Noxious w**ds and other invasive species can reduce agricultural productivity, displace native plants, damage wildlife habitat, and affect waterways. Certain invasive grasses can also increase wildfire risk. Addressing infestations early helps limit their spread and protect Wyoming’s lands, natural resources, and agricultural economy.

Funding and services vary by district. Visit your county w**d and pest district’s website or review its budget to learn how these services are funded in your community.

What Do Your Local Taxes Support?

Road and Bridge Infrastructure

Reliable roads and bridges connect residents with jobs, schools, medical care, businesses, and essential services. They also support commerce, agriculture, emergency response, and travel between Wyoming’s communities.

Local tax revenue helps counties maintain roads, bridges, culverts, signs, and other transportation infrastructure. Depending on local needs, this work may include grading, paving, repairs, bridge inspections and improvements, drainage maintenance, and snow removal. Regular maintenance helps keep routes safe and dependable while reducing the risk of more costly repairs in the future.

These connections are especially important in rural Wyoming, where residents and essential services may be separated by significant distances. Funding sources and responsibilities vary by roadway. Campbell County Commissioner Jim Ford joined the Cowboy State Daily Show with Jake last week for a conversation on county leadership, energy development and Wyoming's future.

As the Wyoming County Commissioners Association's 2026 County Commissioner of the Year, Ford was recognized for his outstanding leadership and unwavering commitment to serving the people of Campbell County and Wyoming communities.

"Jim brings a deep understanding of the county's history and a thoughtful vision for the future," said WCCA Executive Director Jerimiah Rieman.

They also explored the opportunities and challenges facing Campbell County, located in the heart of the Powder River Basin, including the importance of responsible energy development, sound land stewardship and maintaining the energy economy and tax base that support communities across Wyoming.

Sheriff’s Department

County sheriff’s offices help protect residents and property by responding to emergencies, enforcing laws, investigating crimes, and maintaining a law-enforcement presence across large geographic areas. They also perform county responsibilities such as operating detention facilities, providing court security, serving legal documents, and coordinating search-and-rescue operations.

Local tax revenue helps fund deputies and other personnel, vehicles, equipment, training, facilities, and technology. These resources are especially important in rural areas, where deputies may travel long distances to respond to calls and serve residents.

Fremont County Commissioner Mike Jones joined Jake on the Cowboy State Daily Show last week for a conversation covering all things Fremont County, his background in business and the experiences that led him to serving as county commissioner.

Wyoming’s public education system helps students develop knowledge and practical skills, prepare for careers or further education, and participate in their communities.

This funding helps provide educational opportunities across Wyoming, including in smaller and rural communities, while supporting the workforce our communities will depend on in the future.
