Cherokee County Rodeo Weather & Heat Safety Message

If you're heading out to the Cherokee County Rodeo this weekend, be prepared for summer heat. Afternoon heat index values are expected to approach or exceed 100 degrees, especially during the late afternoon and early evening hours.

While a few isolated thunderstorms are possible each day, many locations may remain dry and hot. Even where rain occurs, increased humidity can make conditions feel even more uncomfortable.

Heat Safety Tips:

✅ Drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you don't feel thirsty.
✅ Take frequent breaks in the shade or air conditioning when available.
✅ Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing and a hat.
✅ Use sunscreen and reapply as directed.
✅ Never leave children, older adults, or pets unattended in vehicles.
✅ Check on family members, neighbors, and anyone sensitive to heat.
✅ Watch for signs of heat-related illness, including dizziness, nausea, headache, excessive sweating, or confusion.

This afternoon, Cherokee County 911 dispatched deputies to a residence near the Spring Creek community in reference to a reported shooting.

Deputies and investigators responded to the scene and determined that an altercation related to an eviction led to one person being shot in the leg. The injured person was transported to the hospital for treatment.

The preliminary investigation indicates the shooting may have been an act of self defense; however, the incident remains under investigation. There is no ongoing threat to the community at this time.
