What a fantastic opportunity it was to take part in Community Helper Week at Sand Rock Pre-K!

We had the opportunity to visit with these young students and talk about something that is often misunderstood — the role of Animal Control and the Animal Shelter in our community.

We talked about what Animal Control does, but more importantly, we talked about why we do it. We discussed the importance of never approaching or petting a strange dog or cat, recognizing warning signs in animals, bite prevention and mitigation, and why we should never approach or attempt to handle wildlife.

One of the biggest things I wanted these kids to understand is that Animal Control isn't just about picking up stray dogs. The primary function of Animal Control is public safety. We work to protect people from animals, protect animals from people, enforce animal-related laws, help prevent the spread of rabies and other diseases, and educate our community.

And honestly, what better place to start that education than in our schools?

Teaching a child how to safely interact with an animal today could prevent a bite tomorrow. Teaching them not to approach wildlife could keep them from getting hurt. Teaching them to ask permission before petting someone's dog can make a difference. These are simple lessons, but they can have a lifetime impact.

Education is one of the most important tools we have in Animal Control. You can't enforce your way out of every problem. Sometimes the best solution is making sure people understand the risks, understand the laws, and know what to do before a situation ever becomes a problem.

I truly appreciate Sand Rock Pre-K for inviting us to be part of Community Helper Week and allowing us to spend some time with these young students. They were absolutely wonderful, asked some great questions, and hopefully went home with a little more knowledge about animals and how to stay safe around them.

And to all the educators out there, if you would like for us to come speak to your school, classroom, or students, please never hesitate to reach out to us. It doesn't matter if you're teaching Pre-K, elementary, middle school, high school, or even older students. There are different lessons we can tailor to every age group, and we'd be more than happy to come talk about animal safety, responsible pet ownership, Animal Control, animal welfare, public safety, or whatever topic would benefit your students.

Public safety starts with education, and education starts with our kids.

A huge thank-you to the teachers and staff at Sand Rock Pre-K for giving us the opportunity to be a part of such a great week!
