BIST at Columbian: Meeting the Tiger Standard 💙🐯

Our BIST supports connect directly to the Tiger Standard—five characteristics we want every student to build:

Communication • Critical Thinking • Integrity • Respect • Work Ethic

Each week on Tiger TV, we teach and reinforce skills connected to these standards so students can grow into their best selves—not only at school, but wherever life takes them.

BIST helps students practice these skills in real moments, turning challenges into opportunities to learn, reflect, and grow.

BIST at Columbian: Meet Ms. Castor! 💙🐯

Meet Ms. Castor, our Behavior Teacher at Columbian! She works with students to build the social, emotional, and behavioral skills they need to be successful.

While Ms. Castor supports students in our Recovery Room when they need help calming down, reflecting, or making positive choices, much of her work is also preventive!

Through check-ins, regulation breaks, and small-group skill lessons, she helps students develop strategies to manage emotions, solve problems, and make positive choices.

Just like reading and math, behavior skills need to be taught, practiced, and reinforced! Ms. Castor plays an important role in helping our Tigers be their best selves! 🐯

BIST at Columbian: Recovery Room 💙🐯

When a student needs additional support to regain self-regulation—or when behavior is disrupting learning—they may spend time in our Recovery Room with our Behavior Interventionist, Ms. Castor.

This supportive space helps students calm down, process what happened, and prepare to return to learning successfully. Some students also meet with Ms. Castor for targeted skill lessons focused on building the behaviors and strategies they need to be their best selves at school.

BIST at Columbian: Buddy Room 💙🐯

If a student continues to struggle after using the Safe Seat, they may spend a short time in a Buddy Room—a designated Safe Seat in a nearby classroom.

This neutral space gives students a change of setting to help them calm down, reflect, and prepare to return to learning successfully while still being able to listen to and participate in grade-level instruction.

BIST at Columbian: Early Support & Safe Seat 💙🐯

Staff first respond to behavior with a gentle reminder or question, giving students an opportunity to self-correct.

If a student still needs support, they may move to a Safe Seat within the classroom. This is a supportive, non-punitive space where students can calm down while continuing to listen and participate in learning.

The goal is always to provide support early and help students successfully return to expectations.

At Columbian, we know behavior is something students learn, just like reading, writing, and math. 💙🐯

Through the BIST framework, we help students manage frustration, make positive choices, and take responsibility for their actions. BIST is a relationship-based approach that pairs grace with accountability while helping protect learning for everyone.

Over the next few posts, we’ll break down how BIST works at Columbian and how it supports our students in meeting the Tiger Standard.
