The City of Carthage launched a new targeted approach to code enforcement in April of 2026, focused on improving neighborhood appearance, safety, and overall quality of life. This effort brings together Public Works, Police, and Fire personnel to ensure a coordinated and consistent approach across the community.
Over the past month, crews have been working in a designated focus area while continuing normal operations citywide. Early results show encouraging progress, with many property owners taking steps to address maintenance issues after receiving notification. Most interactions have been positive, with residents asking questions, seeking guidance, and beginning improvements to their properties.
A key part of this updated approach is how the City is managing property maintenance efforts. In the past, structural concerns were largely handled through a complaint-driven process, while yard maintenance was more proactively monitored. Today, Public Works has dedicated staff focused specifically on these areas, with team members assigned to monitor weeds and debris across different parts of the city, and staff continuing to oversee structural concerns. This balanced approach allows for both proactive outreach and responsiveness to community concerns.
In addition to general cleanup efforts, the City has implemented a process to connect property owners with available resources, including organizations that may assist with rehabilitation projects. Life safety concerns are also being more closely monitored, with coordination in place to involve the Fire Marshal when needed.
Residents may begin to notice visible improvements in the initial focus area, as work continues on homes and yards. These types of projects can take time, and staff will remain engaged with property owners to support long-term compliance.
While this targeted approach is underway, code enforcement staff remain committed to addressing issues throughout the entire city. The next phase of the program will expand to a new area, continuing the Cityโ€™s efforts to enhance neighborhoods and maintain community standards.
The City appreciates the cooperation of residents as we work together to keep Carthage safe, clean, and welcoming.
