Founded in 1967, The Maryland State Arts Council (MSAC) is an agency of the State of Maryland's Department of Commerce that plays an essential role, ensuring every person has access to the transformative power of the arts. MSAC advances the arts in our state by providing leadership that champions creative expression, diverse programming, equitable access, lifelong learning, and the arts as a celebrated contributor to the quality of life for all the people of Maryland.

Welcome Will, our Communications Intern!

Born in Norfolk, Virginia, and based in Washington, D.C., William (Phresh Ingredient) Clarke IV’s photography captures more than a moment. A visual storyteller, community curator, and producer, he specializes in documentary portraiture and long-form photojournalism rooted in film photography. Phresh’s work centers individuals who are often overlooked and creates spaces where people truly feel seen. His images have appeared in print and digital publications, and his exhibition presence spans community spaces, curated group shows, and institutional galleries throughout the D.C. region and beyond. He is currently a first-year MFA candidate in Photography & Media + Society at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA), class of 2028, and is interning with us until December.

Compensation is as much as $650+, depending on the number of organizations assigned. This includes a $50 paid training, and $75 for each artistic activity visit completed.

Grants for Artists is now accepting applications!

Unlike many independent artist grants, GFA awards are based primarily on eligibility. MSAC staff review applications, then allocate grants to each county or jurisdiction in proportion to its share of eligible applications. Awards are selected at random.
