From Fellow to NextGeneration, the journey continues.

This Homecoming season, City Teaching Alliance is celebrating the alumni who continue to grow, lead, and make an impact in education and their communities. Meet Daivona, a 2019 Fellow whose City Teaching Alliance journey has come full circle.

Today, Daivona is a Literacy Coach at Baltimore Design School, the same school where she completed her residency nearly eight years ago. She also facilitates district professional development for the Odell curriculum and coaches track and field with Baltimore City Schools, continuing to support students and educators both inside and outside the classroom.

From starting her teaching journey as a Fellow to now supporting teachers at the very school where it all began, Daivona’s story is a powerful reminder of the lasting impact of community, mentorship, and purpose.

From Fellow to NextGeneration, the journey continues.

This Homecoming season, City Teaching Alliance is celebrating the alumni who continue to grow, lead, and create meaningful change in their communities. Meet Nakeya Smothers, a Baltimore 2017 Fellow whose experience laid the foundation for a career rooted in education, leadership, and service.

Today, she serves as Director of Operations at York Day Early Learning in Pennsylvania. Over the past year, she helped create and develop Twilight Care, one of York County’s first overnight childcare programs, designed to support working parents and guardians who need dependable childcare beyond traditional daycare hours.

Now overseeing both the center’s daytime and overnight programs, her journey is a powerful example of how the skills, experiences, and foundation built through City Teaching Alliance can continue to shape leadership far beyond the classroom.

We’re celebrating where she started, where she is now, and the impact she continues to make. 💚

WHERE ARE THEY NOW? 💚

From Fellow to NextGeneration, the journey continues. This Homecoming season, City Teaching Alliance is celebrating our alumni and the paths they’ve taken since their time as Fellows.

Today, Latianna serves as an Early Childhood Educator with DC Public Schools, where she has spent the past eight years supporting children and families across Washington, D.C. Her work focuses on early literacy and helping young learners build the foundational phonics and decoding skills they need for long-term reading success.

Her City Teaching Alliance journey has also come full circle. After beginning as a Fellow, Latianna has returned to support the next generation of educators as a pilot mentor, Selector, equity auditor, and professional development consultant.

From navigating the challenges of returning to the classroom after the pandemic to mentoring future educators, Latianna continues to lead with perseverance, reflection, and a commitment to supporting others.

This Homecoming season, City Teaching Alliance is celebrating the alumni who continue to carry their experiences forward and create meaningful impact in their communities. Meet Tia Simmons, M.Ed., whose journey reflects the lasting impact of literacy, family engagement, and authentic relationships.

Today, Tia is a Partnership Associate with Children’s Home Society, where she brings her passion for family literacy and engagement to her work. She is also a published children’s author of Ace the Great, inspired by her son and the children of color she taught throughout her career.

As she works toward completing her MBA at Johns Hopkins, Tia is looking ahead to launching her own early literacy and family engagement initiative.

That sense of community continues to shape Sinh’s work, along with a commitment to lifelong growth.

From presenting at the Global IB Conference in Hong Kong to sailing the North Atlantic Ocean through NOAA’s Teacher at Sea program, Sinh’s journey reflects a belief that there is always room to learn, grow, and try something new.

Now entering his 10th school year at Uplift Education’s Mighty Primary, Sinh has returned to his original assignment campus as a primary teacher. He set a personal goal to see his first classroom of students graduate high school, and in May 2027, he’ll have the opportunity to see that goal come full circle.
