Tessa Mills, our recent intern from the University of Kentucky, worked with the 1843 volume of the Early School of Medicine Dissertation adding metadata to an internal spreadsheet which will be made accessible for users to more easily use the collection online. She wrote a blog post about some of her findings and her research that you can find on our homepage!

Curious about AI tools for finding and summarizing research? 📚

Join us virtually on March 31 at noon for a 30-minute introduction to Consensus; an AI-powered search engine that synthesizes peer-reviewed literature to highlight areas of agreement (and disagreement) in the evidence.

In this session, you’ll learn:
❤️ How Consensus works and what it searches
💛 When it can save you time exploring an evidence base
🖤 Its strengths and limitations
❤️ How it compares to traditional databases and other AI tools

Consensus is a powerful accelerator, but not a replacement for systematic searching. Join us to learn how to use it thoughtfully and effectively.

“Valentine” might make you think of Saint Valentine or Valentine's Day. But it was also once a popular first name and is still a familiar last name.

The University of Maryland, Baltimore has seen at least 15 graduates with the last name of Valentine and an additional 5 graduates with the first name of Valentine.

❤️📊Love Data Week📊❤️

Love Data Week, set for Feb. 9 to 13, is an international celebration of all things data!

Each year, the Data and Bioinformation Services team at the Health Sciences and Human Services Library engages the university community on topics such as data management, sharing, wrangling, and visualization, as well as open and reproducible science.

This year’s theme is “Where’s the Data?,” which encourages us to think about data’s journey from collection through storage and preservation.

Check our website to see what data related events there will be at the library this week! (Including a free donut event 👀)

We’re almost 2 weeks into 2026 and the HSHSL has been kicking off the year with a bang already!

Here at the HSHSL, we have been finalizing the annual report for 2025, learning more digital accessibility best practices, and a few of us even went to a singing masterclass at the Hippodrome!

We have a lot we are looking forward to this spring semester as well. Be sure to check out the library to see what services and resources we can offer you during your time at UMB!

HSHSL is proud to host “Anna Tomi: Beneath the Surface”, a three-dimensional work of art designed by the Creative HeArts Team. The team is composed of University of Maryland Baltimore School of Medicine students Ana Scherf, Abby Kim, Vicky Carter, and advisor Dr. Abdulhameed Al-Sabban.

“Our vision was to bring learning to life. The goal was to transform a standard human mannequin into something that reflects both the knowledge and the creativity that defines medicine as a science and an art.” – Ana Scherf
