For cities working on housing affordability, manufactured housing is often part of the answer. Manufactured housing just got a federal refresh. HUD has released its Next Generation Manufactured Housing Action Plan, a framework that modernizes the 50-year-old HUD Code to carry out the bipartisan 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act signed into law this past July.

Congratulations to Representative Sam Park on receiving GMA’s 2026 Champion of Georgia’s Cities Award!

During the 2025-2026 legislative session, Rep. Park served as an important partner to GMA in his role as House Minority Whip, helping facilitate conversations on key municipal priorities. His collaboration with GMA staff on local tax policy, public safety, and housing permitting helped ensure the perspectives and needs of Georgia’s cities were considered throughout the legislative process.

GMA State Relations Manager Noah Roenitz presented the award during the Lawrenceville City Council meeting on Oct. 26.

Thank you, Rep. Park, for your continued collaboration and commitment to supporting and the residents they serve!

Here's one for cities and counties that run their own crime labs: the DNA Capacity Enhancement for Backlog Reduction (CEBR) program offers federal funding to help local crime laboratories process more DNA samples for entry into CODIS, the national database that helps solve and prevent crime.

If your local government owns or operates a crime lab, this is worth a look. The first-step application (SF-424 via Grants.gov) is due Nov. 3, with the full application due Nov. 10 via JustGrants.

When it comes to property tax reform, Georgia's cities are asking state lawmakers for flexibility, not a formula. At an Oct. 21 House Blue-Ribbon Study Committee hearing on local government taxation, funding and budgeting, GMA First Vice President and Suwanee Mayor Jimmy Burnette made the case that cities rely on different revenue sources and deliver services based on what their communities actually need — which makes a one-size-fits-all approach to property tax reform a hard fit.

The message to lawmakers: Give cities more tools to manage their budgets, rather than new statewide limits that don't account for how different Georgia's cities really are.
