PRESS RELEASE:
ACCPD Investigates Fatal Crash

On September 3, 2026, at approximately 6:00 AM, the Athens-Clarke County Police Department responded to a multi-vehicle crash near the intersection of Highway 29 North and Talley Crossing.

The initial investigation indicates Wayne Voyles, 80, of Hull, Georgia, was driving a 2012 Chevrolet Equinox northbound in a southbound lane of Hwy 29. Voyles struck a 2022 Toyota Tacoma traveling southbound on Hwy 29. The Tacoma was pushed into a 2022 Toyota Highlander, which was also headed southbound on Hwy 29.

All three drivers were transported by EMS to a local hospital. The drivers of the Tacoma and Highlander were treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Voyles succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.

This is an ongoing investigation. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Master Police Officer Lewis at [email protected] or 762-400-7169.

Voyles is the 8th victim of a fatal crash in 2026 in Athens-Clarke County.

ACCPD is investigating a “catfishing” operation in which a suspect used fictitious photos and identities to defraud individuals. Caleb Mills of South Carolina was arrested on July 20, 2026, for Identity Fraud and other related fraudulent offenses.

As the investigation continues, additional victims have been identified. ACCPD reminds our community to use caution when developing relationships online, particularly when someone you have never met begins asking for money, gifts, or other material items. As technology and artificial intelligence continue to evolve, online scams and catfishing schemes can become increasingly sophisticated.

If you believe you may be a victim of this investigation or any other fraudulent activity, please contact the Athens-Clarke County Police Department and file a report.

ACCPD has terminated former civilian employee Nick Barker, Criminal Intelligence Analyst Supervisor, following an investigation into the improper use of the department’s Flock Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) system.

ACCPD has requested an independent criminal investigation by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI), while the department’s Office of Professional Standards continues its administrative investigation.

Chief of Police Jerry Saulters said, “Trust is the foundation of our relationship with the community we serve, and there is no greater responsibility than protecting that trust. I am deeply disappointed by the former employee’s actions and their impact on the confidence our community places in this department. Conduct that compromises that trust has no place within the Athens-Clarke County Police Department, and we will continue to hold our employees to the highest standards of integrity and accountability. To that end, I am committed to moving forward with a complete examination of ACCPD’s ALPR technology and how we use these systems.”

During the investigation, officers discovered the suspects were in possession of ma*****na, M**A pills, two Mini Draco fi****ms, a digital scale, and drug packaging materials.

Following a thorough investigation, the Athens-Clarke County Police Department has concluded there is no evidence to support that a r**e occurred in connection with the investigation into a possible sexual assault that occurred in downtown Athens on August 21st.

During the investigation, detectives identified fraudulent financial transaction card activity involving the victim. This investigation resulted in financial transaction card-related charges against Timothy Evans.

Additionally, the Athens-Clarke County Police Department identified and arrested a second suspect in connection with financial transaction card fraud. Dennie Smith, a 40-year-old male of Athens, has been charged with Financial Transaction Card Theft and Financial Transaction Card Fraud.

The Athens-Clarke County Police Department takes all reports of sexual assault seriously and appreciates the cooperation of those involved throughout the investigation.
