The Athens-Clarke County Unified Government (ACCGov) Public Utilities Department along with the Solid Waste Department is working to address delays that have affected the timing of utility bills for some customers which includes ACC Solid Waste customers. These delays have led to some billing periods of more than the usual four weeks. These longer billing periods resulted in customers receiving higher bills than they normally expected.
The primary reason for the billing delays is the transition to a new billing software and customer portal. The software upgrade required the ACCGov Public Utilities Department to adjust billing processes, as well as long-standing procedures. Those changes, combined with existing workload and billing-processing requirements, have contributed to longer billing timelines. Originally planned to launch in December 2026, the new billing software and customer portal is now expected to launch in late 2027.
“We understand that receiving a bill later than expected can be frustrating and can make budgeting more difficult,” said Hugh Ogle, ACCGov Public Utilities Interim Director. “We want customers to know that we recognize the problem and are actively working to correct it.”
The ACCGov Public Utilities Department is now taking a systematic approach to correct these issues by identifying, categorizing, and prioritizing them, beginning with those that have the greatest direct impact on customers. Practices that provide crucial checks and balances are being restored and strengthened. Teams across the ACCGov Public Utilities Department are working together to address current billing items while improving the process going forward.
Because billing takes place on established cycles, these corrections will not appear all at once. The goal is to return to normal billing operations by the January 2027 billing cycle.
