๐ Drowning Prevention Month: Know the Signs of a Rip Current ๐
Rip currents can be difficult to spotโbut knowing what to look for can save your life.
โ
Ask your child:
Do you know how to spot a rip current?
๐ Signs of a rip current:
A channel of choppy or rough water between calmer waves
A gap in the breaking waves
Water that looks darker (deeper) than surrounding areas
Foam or debris moving quickly out to sea
๐จ What to do if you get caught in a rip current:
๐ซ Stay calm โ donโt panic
You wonโt be pulled under, just carried out
๐ Float to live
Lie on your back and control your breathing
โ๏ธ Donโt fight it
Donโt try to swim back against the current
๐ Swim parallel to the shore
Once free, head back to the beach at an angle
๐ฃ๏ธ Raise your hand and shout for help
Lifeguards can spot and assist you quickly
๐จโ๐ฉโ๐งโ๐ฆ Talk to your child about why this is important:
Fighting the current can quickly exhaust even strong swimmers
Staying calm keeps you safe and helps you think clearly
๐ฌ Start the conversation:
โWhat do you think you should do first if a current starts pulling you out?โ
โ
Top tip:
Swim between the red and yellow flagsโlifeguards place these away from rip currents.
Stay aware, stay calm, and stay safe at the beach ๐
