What happens when a stray dog is found?

Many stray dogs manage to get reunited without having to come into our care.

Why? Because they are following their legal obligations and have a collar and tag on and up to date microchip details.

Every stray dog is checked for a collar, tag and microchip by our Dog Wardens.
If your details are correct, you could get that all-important call within minutes 📞

If not… it makes things much harder.
If we can’t contact the owner it’s important that we get these dogs somewhere safe so they can be looked after whilst we try and locate the owner

🌡️ Hot weather is on the way – don’t forget your livestock! 🐄🐑🐎

With extreme heat expected, it’s vital to protect both your wellbeing and your animals’.

✅ Plan ahead – make sure your livestock are protected from extreme weather
✅ Provide constant access to food and fresh water
✅ Check animals regularly and act quickly if you spot any issues

🐾 Watch for signs of heat stress, such as panting, sweating or rapid breathing – and seek specialist advice if you’re unsure.

💧 Water is critical in hot weather

Animals will drink much more, so ensure:

There’s always enough for all animals
Supplies are clean and reliable
Backup plans are in place (e.g. bowsers or alternative sources)

🚜 Transporting livestock? Take extra care

Avoid journeys in temperatures above 30°C
Travel early morning or overnight where possible
Ensure good ventilation, space, and access to water
Reduce stress during loading and unloading

⚠️ If water supplies fail or animals are at risk, act immediately — including relocating animals if needed.

This dog was found emaciated and showing clear signs of recently having puppies. This dog is currently safe with our Dog Warden team. We're working to locate her puppies and an owner – could you help?

Undercooked chicken can carry harmful bacteria like Campylobacter so it must be cooked all the way through.
Stick to the rules:
Steaming hot throughout
No pink meat
Juices run clear
Don’t wash raw chicken
Follow the rules and keep your match day a win.

⚖️ Microchipping: It’s the Law

Every dog must be microchipped and registered by 8 weeks old, and it’s a legal requirement to keep the registered details accurate and up to date at all times.

This means:
✔️ Your dog must have a working microchip
✔️ Your contact details must be correct on an approved DEFRA compliant database
✔️ You must update the information if you move house, change your number, or rehome a dog

📌 If your dog isn’t microchipped, or if the details are incorrect, you will receive a legal notice requiring you to update them. Failure to comply with that notice is an offence and could lead to further action being taken against you.

Here in Wiltshire, we take microchipping offences seriously. We take enforcement action on those owners who fail to comply with microchipping notices. We will continue to follow up on cases where owners refuse to meet their legal responsibilities.

Microchipping isn’t just about the law — it’s about your dog’s safety.
A correctly registered microchip is the quickest and most effective way for us to get your dog home if they stray or are found.

Together with idverde UK, we have relaunched the “Leave only Pawprints” poster competition to help keep our parks and paths clean and dog-friendly 🐾

🎨 If you're child is aged 4–14, design a fun, eye-catching poster reminding dog owners to clean up after their pets.

🏆 Winners in each age group will receive a £50 Amazon voucher and have their artwork displayed across Wiltshire!

Today is Clean Air Day – a chance for us all to think about the air we breathe and the small changes that can make a big difference to our health and environment.

Across Wiltshire, we’re taking action to improve air quality and support healthier communities. Through the Wiltshire Community Air Network, we’re working with local groups and residents to monitor air quality and raise awareness at a neighbourhood level.

We’re also supporting School Streets initiatives, helping create safer, cleaner spaces around schools by reducing traffic at key times of the day – making it easier for children and families to walk, wheel and cycle.

We can all play a part in improving air quality across our county.

We regularly take in stray dogs who do have microchips…
💔 But the details are out of date
💔 Or the phone number no longer works

A simple update could mean the difference between a quick reunion and a stay in kennels.

Since January this year we have taken 80 stray dogs into our care. 50 of those had microchips and only 7 had up to date microchip details.
