As we enter the school half term holidays and with more bad weather set to arrive on Saturday with Storm Boelo , if you plan to visit the coast or a waterside location, the RNLI advises:

Stay a safe distance from the water as conditions could knock you off your feet or wash you in.

If you do find yourself in trouble in the water, the RNLI’s safety advice is float to live:

Tilt your head back with your ears submerged
Relax and try to breathe normally
Move your hands and legs to help you stay afloat
It’s OK if your legs sink, we all float differently
Once your breathing is under control, call for help or swim to safety.

If you see someone else in danger – don’t enter the water yourself as you could also end up in difficulty. Instead remember Phone, Float, Throw:

Phone 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard to get help.
Tell the struggling person to Float to Live.
Throw them something that floats, such as a life ring.

Hartlepool Lifeboats launched during Storm Austen
Hartlepool RNLI volunteers were paged at 9.42am on Friday 23rd October by Humber Coastguard to attend an area outside the Hartlepool Marina piers where a man overboard device had been activated.
Both Hartlepool RNLI inshore and all weather lifeboats were launched at 10.00am and proceeded to search an area outside the Marina along with a Coastguard helicopter from Humberside.

The device that caused the alert was believed to have been activated inland and with nothing found the search was eventually stood down by Humber Coastguard at 11.25am.

Hartlepool RNLI Lifeboat Operations manager Steve Pounder said 'The volunteer crewmembers conducted a thorough search of the area in difficult conditions they then safely returned back to the Ferry Road lifeboat station at 11.30am where the boats were refuelled and made ready for service by 11.55am.

Sea state was described as moderate with an easterly 15 knot wind.

Girl Guides 'Smarties' fundraiser for Hartlepool RNLI.
Hartlepool RNLI volunteers were presented with a ÂŁ200.00 donation from members of the 34th Hartlepool Girl Guides group during their visit to the Ferry Road lifeboat station.

Girl Guide leader Rachel Cornelius said 'The girls really enjoyed the visit. They were trying kit on, had a tour of the all weather lifeboat and inshore lifeboat and learned a lot about sea safety at the same time.

Before the visit we collected 20p pieces in Smartie tubes which raised ÂŁ200.00 for the charity.
The girls were also presented with their Mayday Mayday badge. The Mayday Mayday Badge is a water safety challenge badge created in partnership with the RNLI. It teaches members of all ages—Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and Rangers crucial water survival and safety skills.'

Hartlepool RNLI lifeboat visits officer Jimmy Slaughter said 'It was a pleasure to host the group who bombarded us with questions throughout the visit and at the end of the day I'm sure we got the sea safety message across and on behalf of all the volunteer crew can I say thank you for the very generous donation which will help save lives at sea.'

Congratulations to Hartlepool RNLI crewmembers Danielle Austin and Glen Pearson who completed the Tier 1 training programme on Thursday evening.
Passing Tier 1 means a volunteer is considered competent and trusted to operate as part of the volunteer crew on actual rescues.
