The booking system for burning permits is now open and you can book permits from14th September. Please remember these rules around burning on your plot:
• No items should be brought onto plots specifically for burning.
• Remove/recycle rubbish rather than burning.
• Any necessary burning should be limited to small burning bins.
• Avoid burning materials that create smoke.
• Be mindful of weather conditions and neighbouring plots and properties.
• Only burn when others are not out enjoying the sunshine and good weather

One of the joys of visiting our allotments is spotting the wildlife that calls them home. Some creatures are far too quick for the camera, but every now and then one stays still long enough for a photo. 🦋🐝🌼

Caring for our shared areas! 💚
A group of allotment tenants, along with two officers from the Allotments Team, came together today to tackle the access route adjacent Stranton Allotments.
This track is well used not only by allotment tenants but also by local residents, providing a safe route to school and a popular path for dog walkers. It started to look neglected, with litter including lots of dog muck bags, plastic bottles, crisp packets and sweet wrappers and larger fly tip items like toys and tiles. Together, we collected the rubbish and piled it up ready for collection by HBC.
The lane has also been strimmed by one of the allotment tenants, making a huge difference to the appearance of the area. It's now looking much cleaner, tidier and more welcoming for everyone who uses it.
A big thank you to everyone who gave up their time to help improve this well used area making it nicer for everyone.

What a difference!🌱
A neglected plot at Nicholson Field has been completely transformed by one of our new tenants. In less than a year, it has gone from a grot spot to a lovely garden, producing a fantastic crop and is a credit to the site.
The hard work and dedication of the tenants is clear to see. It's great to see what can be achieved.

Indigo Blue Beauty tomatoes spotted at Burn Valley today, where I met a lovely tenant who kindly showed me around her plot. Not only do they look amazing, they taste delicious too. If you're looking for something different to grow next year, I'd highly recommend giving these a go.

🌧️🌧️Finally, some rain! 🌧️🌧️
If you don't already collect rainwater on your plot, now is the perfect time to think about adding gutters to your shed or greenhouse. Harvesting rainwater is better for your plants, prevents flooding at the base of structures and can help reduce water bills!
As you can see, water butts come in all shapes and sizes, from repurposed containers to purpose built.

This morning, two officers from the Allotments Team, together with a tenant from the site, collected this pile of fly tipped cans from the lane at Nicholson Field. The cans were then taken to Greenbank for recycling, filling one and a half of their dumpy bags.
Around 100 batteries were also picked up and responsibly disposed of through a local supermarket recycling scheme.
The Allotments Service is not funded to deal with fly-tipping. As a result, situations such as this require officers to divert time and resources away from their core responsibilities.
We would like to thank our tenant for giving up his time today to assist with the clean-up. His help, together with his brush and shovel, was greatly appreciated and helped us finish sooner.

We are aware that a pile of tin cans that has been dumped on the allotment lane at Nicholson Field and this is extremely disappointing to see. The Allotments Team will be attending tomorrow morning, litter pickers at the ready, to collect the cans and take them to Greenbank for recycling.

It’s National Allotments Week and this year’s theme is Grow to Learn! Share your knowledge, pick up new ideas and learn from fellow gardeners.
What’s the best gardening tip you’ve learned from someone on your allotment site?

We’ve gathered some gardening tips from plot holders at one of our allotment sites

🌱‘Make your own compost – its rewarding, recycling and your plants will thank you!’
🌱‘Keep learning from others, from trying, from the internet from anywhere!’
🌱'Everyone looks at the land differently and everyone has different ideas that work for them there’s no right or wrong’
🌱‘Be patient and work with the land, you can’t grow everything everywhere’
🌱‘Water your plants at the roots not over the leaves and drench them a few times a week rather than sprinkling daily so the water goes deep down where it can’t evaporate’
🌱‘If you have a flooding plot or poor soil then add some raised beds to improve the soil in your growing area’

We are still receiving complaints about fires on allotment sites.

Today we witnessed two separate fires on the same site that had been left unattended producing black smoke. Not only is this a breach of the allotment tenancy rules it is also harmful to health. With the current dry weather conditions there is also a significant risk of fire spreading beyond the plot.
Action will be taken against the tenants responsible.
The permitted burning period has now ended, and no fires are allowed on allotment sites. This includes bonfires, fires in burn bins, and fires in stoves.
We ask all tenants to be considerate of their neighbours. Nearby residents should be able to enjoy the warm weather without black smoke drifting into their gardens and homes, particularly when windows are open, children are playing outside, and washing has been left out to dry.
Thank you for your cooperation in helping to keep allotment sites safe and being a good neighbour to the surrounding community.
