Strathcona County RCMP Asks Motorists to Prepare for Changing Road Conditions Ahead of Snowfall
Strathcona County, Alta. – With snowfall forecasted for the Strathcona County area in the coming days, the Strathcona County RCMP is reminding motorists to prepare for winter driving conditions and adjust their travel plans accordingly.
Snow-covered roads, reduced visibility and icy conditions can quickly create hazardous driving environments, particularly on highways and rural roads. Drivers are encouraged to monitor weather and road reports; ensure their vehicles are winter-ready and allow extra time to reach their destinations safely.
A change in weather conditions can affect driving performance, stopping distances and visibility. Taking precautions before heading out can help reduce the risk of collisions and keep Alberta's roads safer for everyone.
The Strathcona County RCMP recommends the following winter driving tips:
❄️Check weather forecasts and road conditions before travelling.
❄️Consider postponing non-essential travel if conditions are expected to deteriorate.
❄️Ensure your vehicle is equipped for winter, including appropriate tires, functioning lights and a full fuel tank.
❄️Remove all snow and ice from windows, mirrors, headlights and taillights before driving.
❄️Slow down and increase your following distance to allow for longer stopping times.
❄️Carry a winter emergency kit with blankets, extra clothing, water, snacks, a flashlight, booster cables and a cellphone charger.
❄️Make sure your cellphone is charged before leaving and let someone know your travel plans if travelling longer distances.
❄️If you become stranded, remain with your vehicle and call for assistance when it is safe to do so.
“With winter weather on the way, a little preparation can make a big difference. We encourage motorists to slow down, leave extra space between vehicles and ensure they’re ready for changing road conditions,” says Constable Cheri-Lee Smith, Strathcona County RCMP Public Information Officer. “Taking a few extra precautions can help everyone reach their destination safely.”
