Strathcona County residents are advised to watch for a sophisticated scam involving the theft of wallets or purses, followed by fraudulent calls from individuals impersonating financial institution employees.

Suspects may steal wallets or purses using distraction techniques or pickpocketing including in busy public places such as restaurants, cafés and retail locations. Shortly after the theft, victims may receive a phone call from someone claiming to be from their financial institution’s fraud department. The caller may use a spoofed phone number that appears legitimate and create a false sense of urgency, claiming they are trying to protect the victim’s account.

The caller may then ask for a PIN, password, verification code or other banking information. If the suspect obtains this information, they may use it to make unauthorized ATM withdrawals, purchases or other fraudulent transactions.

Anyone who believes they have been the victim of a wallet theft or fraud should contact their financial institution immediately to secure their accounts and report any unauthorized transactions. Victims should also report the theft or suspected fraud to their police of jurisdiction. In Strathcona County, call 780-467-7741 or come by the detachment at 911 Bison Way, Sherwood Park.

Talking about online safety doesn't have to be complicated.

Try asking your child these questions:

✅ Who are you talking to online?
✅ What apps are you using right now?
✅ Would you tell me if something online made you uncomfortable?

Regular, judgment-free conversations can help children feel comfortable coming to a parent or trusted adult when something isn't right.
