Medicine Hat's economic diversification is creating new opportunities for established businesses to grow in unexpected directions. Redarc Manufacturing is a great example. When the company started, oil and gas was a primary source of industrial work in the region.

Today, they're manufacturing components for renewable energy projects, supporting aerospace and defence applications, and serving customers across a wide range of sectors. "The biggest surprise would be clean energy, the wind farms and the solar fields," says co-owner Ryan Hazelaar, reflecting on how the work has evolved. This kind of adaptability isn't just good business strategy—it's essential.

By maintaining the flexibility to move between industries and applications, Redarc has built resilience into their operations. One month might bring work on toolboxes, the next could involve components for drone testing infrastructure.

"One industry is up and another might not be there anymore. You have to kind of keep moving and rolling with the punches," Ryan explains. It's a reminder that our region's industrial capabilities aren't tied to any single sector.

As new industries emerge and grow in Medicine Hat, local manufacturers are ready to support them with the skills, equipment, and problem-solving expertise they've been building for years.

Our team recently attended the SIWI Workforce Solutions Summit, where employers and workforce professionals came together to discuss practical approaches to recruitment, retention, leadership, and workplace culture.

Discussions focused on creating workplace cultures that foster employee engagement and retention, developing leadership approaches that empower teams to perform at their best, strengthening cross-cultural competency to support inclusive workplaces, and implementing workforce development practices that contribute to long-term business success. It was encouraging to see employers from the city investing in conversations and tools that can help address workforce challenges and strengthen organizational performance.

Thank you to SIWI and the presenters for sharing insights, resources, and practical strategies that employers can take back to their workplaces.

Last week, we joined partners and stakeholders from the Southeast Alberta Economic Opportunity Strategy for a tour of the G.S. Dunn Dry Mustard Millers facility in Bow Island.

Since taking over operations at the former Spitz plant in 2019, GS Dunn has grown its presence as the world’s largest dry mustard miller, supplying customers in more than 110 countries. It was especially inspiring to hear stories of former Spitz employees returning to work at the facility, highlighting the strong ties between the company and the community.
