River flows 🌊 have peaked and some parks, trails, and recreational areas are beginning to reopen.

‼️ The river remains high and fast-moving. Please continue to respect all closures and stay back from the riverbank.

⚠️ River Safety Reminder ⚠️

Recent rainfall and runoff have increased flow rates on the South Saskatchewan River. The river is currently flowing at more than 900 cubic metres per second and is expected to rise another 1 to 1.5 metres over the next two days.

As a precaution, several low-lying areas adjacent to the river have been temporarily closed, including Police Point Park, Echo Dale Regional Park Campground, boat launches, and sections of river trails.

While there is no anticipated risk of overland flooding, the river is large, powerful, and unpredictable when flowing this fast. Fast-moving water, unstable riverbanks, and changing conditions can create serious hazards.

We are asking residents to stay off the river, respect the closures, and, keep a safe distance from the riverbank until conditions improve.

💧 Thank you and stay safe!

Last Saturday, members of MHFES attended the funeral of former Fire Chief Ron Bell to honour a life dedicated to service.

Chief Bell served our department for 33 years, beginning as a firefighter before rising through the ranks to become Fire Chief in 1984.

In the fire service, we never forget those who came before us. We stand on the shoulders of the leaders, mentors, and firefighters who helped shape our department and profession.

Thank you, Chief Bell, for your service, leadership, and commitment to the Medicine Hat community. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones.

Who knew a watermelon 🍉 could cause this much havoc?

We came across this old newspaper clipping recently and couldn’t help but share it. A boiling watermelon in Medicine Hat once led to toxic fumes, hazmat crews, and created quite the scene in Central Park.

Shout out to the Medicine Hat News for capturing the drama of the “Deadly Melon” so perfectly 😂 This is proof that emergency calls can come in all shapes and sizes…
