Disability Employment Program - Creating Employment Opportunities in the NT

The Disability Employment Program (DEP) provides people with disability with opportunities to gain valuable workplace experience, develop new skills and explore career pathways within the Northern Territory Public Sector (NTPS).

Delivered in partnership with Inclusive Employment Australia (IEA) providers, the program supports inclusive employment by connecting eligible participants with suitable roles across NT Government agencies.

What does the program offer?

* Entry-level employment opportunities through temporary contracts of up to two years.
* Flexible working hours to accommodate individual needs.
* Practical workplace experience, skills development and on-the-job training.
* Opportunities for agencies to consider ongoing employment beyond the initial contract.

Who can apply?

To be eligible, applicants must:

* Have a disability.
* Be an Australian citizen, permanent resident or hold an appropriate visa.
* Be registered with an Inclusive Employment Australia (IEA) provider.
* Be new to the DEP and not have previously participated through a DEP employment contract.

How does it work?

IEA providers work closely with Northern Territory Government agencies to match participants with roles suited to their skills and abilities. They also provide on-the-job training and ongoing support to both participants and employers, helping to create inclusive and supportive workplaces.

Nominations Now Open - City of Darwin’s 2026 Lord Mayoral Awards!

The City of Darwin is calling for nominations for the 2026 Lord Mayoral Awards, celebrating individuals and groups making a positive difference in creating a more inclusive and accessible Darwin.

Now in their eighth year, the awards recognise people with disability who champion the rights and wellbeing of others, alongside individuals and organisations working to strengthen inclusion and accessibility across the community.

Lord Mayor Peter Styles is encouraging the community to nominate those whose dedication and contributions deserve recognition.

New for 2026 is the Support Worker of the Year Award, proudly sponsored by Territory Care and Support Services (TCASS). This new category celebrates the outstanding dedication, professionalism and compassion of disability support workers and teams who make a meaningful difference in people's lives.

Nominations are open across four award categories in 2026:

* Champion Award: Celebrates an individual with disability who has demonstrated outstanding commitment to advocating for the rights and wellbeing of people with disability.

* Rising Star Award: Recognises a young person with disability, aged under 25, who is making a positive and ongoing impact through advocacy within their school, workplace or community.

* Community Impact Award: Acknowledges individuals or groups, with or without disability, whose advocacy, volunteering, activism or community initiatives have made a meaningful contribution to advancing disability inclusion.

* Support Worker of the Year Award: Honours an exceptional paid disability support worker or team who has helped a person with disability achieve a personal goal. Nominations must be submitted or endorsed by a person with disability. Proudly supported by TCASS, this award also honours the contribution and legacy of Sharm Bali.

Nominations close Wednesday 4 November 2026.

Winners will be announced at the DiversAbility Fun Day on Thursday 3 December 2026, coinciding with International Day of People with Disability.

Help celebrate those making a difference by nominating a deserving individual or group!

Invisible Disabilities Week | 19–25 October 2026

“You Don’t Look Sick” is the 2026 theme, recognising that not all disabilities are visible.

Approximately 80% to 85% of people with a disability live with an invisible or hidden condition, which makes the need to raise awareness even more important.

This week, we recognise Invisible Disabilities Week, raising awareness of the millions of people living with disabilities that aren't immediately apparent.

From chronic pain and neurological conditions to mental health challenges, hearing impairments, health conditions and cognitive disabilities, invisible disabilities can significantly affect everyday life.

The words “You don't look sick” highlight the misunderstanding and judgement many people with invisible disabilities experience.

Invisible Disabilities Week reminds us to look beyond appearances, challenge assumptions and promote greater understanding, empathy and inclusion.

Just because a disability isn't visible doesn't mean it isn't real.

Cyclone Season in the NT officially runs from November 1st to April 30th.

Because cyclones bring destructive winds, heavy rain, flooding, and storm surges that disrupt power, travel, and communication, the Northern Territory Government advises all residents and visitors to be prepared ahead of time.

Territorians and its visitors are advised to have a Cyclone Emergency Kit available and an Emergency Plan in place.

If you plan to shelter at home, you must ensure your property is secure and fully stocked.

Keep this essential safety information on hand throughout the season.

📞 Emergency Contacts:

• Life-Threatening Emergencies: Call 000
• Flood, Storm, & Cyclone Assistance: Call 132 500 ( Emergency Service)

⚠️ Warning Levels (Australian Warning System):

• Advice (Yellow): An incident has started. Stay informed and monitor conditions.
• Watch and Act (Orange): A heightened level of threat. Start taking action now to protect yourself.
• Emergency Warning (Red): The highest level of danger. Take immediate action to survive.

đź“‹ Key Preparation Steps:

• Emergency Kit: Pack enough supplies to sustain your household for at least 72 hours. Include 10 liters of water per person, non-perishable food, a battery-powered radio, torches, spare batteries, and a first-aid kit.

• Shelter Plans: Check if your home is built to cyclone-resistant codes. If it is not, use the SecureNT website to locate your nearest public emergency shelter.

• Stay Informed: Regularly monitor local media, tune into ABC Darwin (105.7 FM), and check official updates from the Bureau of Meteorology.

It's important that we're all prepared and have everything in place should the need arise.

Thank you to everyone who joined us both in person and online for the IDA 2026 AGM last night!

It was wonderful to have such a fantastic turnout and to connect with so many of our members.

During the meeting, members voted to approve vital updates to our Constitution, officially transitioning our leadership structure from a Management Committee to a Board of Directors.

We are excited to introduce our new leadership team for the upcoming term:

• Chair: Liz Reid AM
• Deputy Chair: Gareth Trew
• Secretary: Cherry Cameron
• Treasurer: Karen McEwan
• Public Officer: Grant Lindsay

We extend our sincere gratitude to our wonderful IDA Patron, The Hon Vicki O’Halloran AO CVO DStJ FAICD, for her enduring support of our mission.

These milestones mark an exciting new era of growth for IDA.

These changes will strengthen our ability to advocate alongside people with disability while positioning our organisation for the future.

The path ahead looks incredibly bright, and we look forward to having you join us on this journey!

15/10/2026

The Australian Government has announced that major reforms to the Disability Standards for Accessible Public Transport 2002 (Transport Standards) and supporting guidelines are now in place.

So what does this mean for you?

The Transport Standards set requirements for public transport operators and providers to make their services accessible and remove discrimination against people with disability.

They’ve been updated to make public transport safer, easier to use and more inclusive for people with disability. These reforms include new requirements for staff training, information sharing, and the design of public transport vehicles, stops and stations.

The Australian Government worked closely with the disability community, industry and all levels of government to develop the reforms.

Public transport operators and providers will need to comply with the updated Transport Standards in addition to their existing obligations. Some requirements must be implemented within 5 to 10 years, while others will only apply when new assets are purchased or existing assets are significantly upgraded.

More information on what these reforms mean to you, including summary documents in accessible formats and frequently asked questions, can be read by going to:

www.infrastructure.gov.au/transportstandards.

Information kits are also available and explain what the reforms mean. You can access these by going to:

For disability representative organisations:

For public transport operators and providers:

Thank you to everyone who was involved in the consultation process and contributed their expertise and lived experience throughout the reform process.

Have your say: Expanded mandatory NDIS registration

First Peoples Disability Network (FPDN) has been engaged by the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission to gather feedback about mandatory NDIS registration for providers delivering High Intensity Daily Personal Activities and Assistance with Daily Personal Activities.

These supports include complex care, such as catheter care and tube feeding, and everyday personal care, such as showering, dressing and using the toilet.

The requirements will begin from 1 July 2027, with all affected providers expected to be registered by the end of 2030.

The decision to expand mandatory registration has already been made by the Government; consultation focuses on how the changes are introduced and the proposed definitions of the supports covered.

Greater understanding is wanted around potential impacts on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with disability, their families, communities and providers, including culturally safe services, choice and control, trusted workers, ACCOs, ACCHOs and smaller providers.

As part of this consultation, you are invited to take part in a survey about the proposed changes.

Your feedback will inform FPDN’s response to the consultation.

NT (Northern Territory) Mental Health Week - October 8 to October 16 2026

This annual awareness campaign is held across the Northern Territory to prioritise social and emotional wellbeing and reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness.

This important event focuses on:

• Individual Wellbeing: Providing practical tools and resources for people to manage their own mental health.
• Community Resilience: Strengthening local networks so communities can support each other through challenges.
• Cultural Connection: Honoring cultural identity and traditional practices that support emotional and social health.
• Reducing Stigma: Encouraging open conversations and help-seeking behaviors for anyone experiencing mental health struggles.

This year’s theme is "Small Steps" and works to remind Territorians that big changes aren't always necessary; small actions - like taking a break from a screen, having a yarn with a trusted friend, eating a comforting meal or just taking time out for yourself, all add up to positive mental health.

Every single step counts. Let’s look out for ourselves, and look after each other, across the NT.
