Congratulations to NSW Police Force Senior Constable Bikash Bharati, joint recipient of the 2026 PFA National Police Bravery Award.

Having arrived in Australia from Nepal in 2015 seeking "opportunity, safety and a better future", he never imagined one day serving the people of NSW as a police officer. Accepting the award for displaying exemplary courage under active fire, he reminded us that "policing is never an individual effort" and shared the recognition with the officers who responded to the incident that night.

"Receiving this award reminds me of how fortunate I am to serve a country and a community that welcomed me and gave me an oppourtunity to contribute."

NSW Police Force | NATIONAL POLICE BRAVERY AWARD WINNER

When others were running from danger, Senior Constable Bikash Bharati ran towards it.

Nominated by his peers, Senior Constable Bharati was recognised as the joint winner of the 2026 National Police Bravery Award.

As one of the first officers on scene at a shooting incident in Sydney, SC Bharati came under fire almost immediately. Despite the ongoing threat, he directed a junior officer to safety and attempted to provide life-saving aid to a seriously injured civilian.

His actions displayed bravery, dedication to duty and selflessness that exemplifies the best traits in policing.

Queensland Police Service | NATIONAL POLICE BRAVERY AWARD WINNERS

The Queensland Police Service have been recognised as joint recipients of the 2026 National Police Bravery Awards for their response to the Wieambilla shootings as part of Operation Uniform Cavan.

Working together under fire from armed offenders, members of Operation Uniform Cavan co-ordinated the response, extracted fallen colleagues at significant personal risk, and ultimately brought the incident to a conclusion.

Their collective actions demonstrated extraordinary courage, professionalism, resilience and teamwork, reflecting the highest standards of policing and a solid commitment to protecting the community.

SA Police Commissioner Grant Stevens APM has devoted his working life to serving and protecting South Australians.

Grant has led with integrity, sound judgment and an unwavering sense of duty, earning the trust of our community through some of the most challenging periods in our state’s history.

He understands South Australia and its people.

From frontline policing to leading our response to major emergencies, and through his work helping young people find a better path, his service has always been grounded in a commitment to others.

That commitment extends well beyond policing - through Operation Flinders, his support for cancer research, prevention and treatment, and his advocacy for organ donation.

Today, I announced that His Majesty King Charles III has approved my recommendation to appoint Commissioner Stevens as our state’s 37th Governor.

I have every confidence Grant will be an outstanding Governor. His ability to connect with people, his steady leadership and his understanding of our community will serve South Australia exceptionally well.

With Emma by his side, I know they will embrace this opportunity to serve and make an exceptional contribution to our state.

Congratulations Grant – we look forward to the swearing-in on 9 December.

It is with profound sadness that we honour Constable Mia Lay, who tragically lost her life in the line of duty at Redfern, NSW, this morning.

Our deepest condolences are with Constable Lay’s family, loved ones, colleagues and friends during this devastating time.

Today is a deeply solemn day for the NSW Police Force members, and indeed for the entire policing family, as we come together to mourn the loss of a wonderful young lady.

May Constable Lay rest in peace. Her service and sacrifice will never be forgotten.

As the sun surely sets,
Dawn will see it arise,
For service above self
Demands its own prize.

You have fought the good fight,
Life’s race has been run,
And peace your reward,
For eternity begun.

And we that are left
Shall never forget,
Rest in peace friend and colleague,
For the sun has now set.
We will remember.

Hasten the dawn

The Queensland Police Union joins serving and retired police across our state in mourning the passing of former Police Commissioner Steve Gollschewski.

Steve dedicated his life to policing and serving the Queensland community, rising through the ranks to lead the organisation he had given so much to.

Today, rank and titles take a back seat. We remember a fellow police officer and extend our deepest sympathy to Steve’s wife, family, friends and colleagues.

Rest in peace, Mr Gollschewski. Your service is done.
