Pirate Party Australia We stand for freedom of information and culture, civil and digital liberties, privacy and anonymity and governmental transparency.

Our movement occupies a unique place in politics, providing leadership in the issues of today which you won’t find in other political parties – digital activism, human rights, economic responsibility and transparency of government. Small government, support for the disadvantaged, social programs and inclusion for the diversity of modern society are at our centre. We are champions of equality for a

ll people, our policies cover a very broad array of public policy issues. We are fighting for an honest, accountable and just Australia. We are strongly opposed to corruption in all forms, we use our voice to challenge and propose alternatives to unfair business dealings and political processes. Our history and legacy in coming from the world’s most active digital political melting pot of its time, our members are part of broader cultural movement that is taking the world into a future where technology is used positively in building a more humane, more just society for all. Acutely aware that technology can be used for purposes other than the good of citizens, we believe that our voice, one that is knowledgeable and experienced in building this future is critically important for Australia now more than ever.

This month of January, the Pirate Party commemorates the memory of Aaron Swartz, hacktivist, and contributor/founder to major internet projects such as Creative Commons, RSS, The Open Library, Reddit and Thoughtworks.

In 2008, Swartz downloaded and made available 2.7 million (20% of total) publicly accessible federal court documents as part of an open government project for which he was subsequently investigated and acquitted by the FBI.

In 2009-2010, Swartz founded the Progressive Change Campaign Committee (to support the election and advocacy for progressive politicians) and Demand Progress (an advocacy group for civil liberties in government). In 2011 he joined Occupy Wall Street and in 2012 he joined the anti-SOPA movement.

In 2008, he downloaded 3.5 million research studies from JSTOR in the belief that scientific research should be open access. For this, he was arrested and prosecuted in 2011 with a potential sentence of 50 years in prison and USD$1 million in fines. On the evening of January 11, 2013, he was found dead in his apartment by su***de.

This weekend for Pirate Party Australia National Congress 2025, I interviewed special guest Vinay Orekondy, founder of the Australian Progressives.

Vinay is an attorney, mediator, community organizer, advocate, and a coalition-builder, is originally from Australia. Upon emigrating to the United States, he became interested in electoral reform issues and was active in Rank the Vote's efforts to bring ranked-choice voting to America. He recently became co-chair of the Braver Network at Braver Angels, and is Co-Founder and Partnerships Director at Better Together America.

Earlier this year in the 2025 Australian Federal Election, the Australian Pirates were joined by the Australian Progressives in our electoral campaign with the Fusion Party. My conversation with Vinay touched on these topics and may more with a special focus on civics, democracy, voting, community building and the future of American/Australian politics.

Today, most physical and digital spaces open to the public are owned by corporations. Our freedom to create and express ourselves is confined to this ever-shrinking public space.

It doesn’t have to be like this.

We can oppose this monopolistic corporate behaviour and demand our spaces be open, competitive and free markets where innovation and creativity can flourish.

Restore the public domain to how it should be. The patent system should be reviewed and reformed with the aim of creating a fairer and more innovative market where creatives can grow without the power imbalances currently holding them back.

Twenty years.

That's how long we've had the FTA.
It's also how long we had to extend our copyright term.

Memo to the Yanks: we have a say too.

Here's to 2025, everybody!

In most countries around the world, copyright works enter the public domain on January 1st, either 50 or 70 years after the year of their authors' death. Since Australia shifted from +50 to (mostly) +70 in the mid 2000s, we're in a 20 year transition period. Just one more year to go!

So, about that social media ban ... .While it's stated for under-16s, all of us will have to hand over sensitive ID.

We’ve written a detailed post on 🌐 efa dot org but here’s the gist: Many people hear "youth social media ban" and think, great! But it’s not that simple–nor is it worth celebrating. Here's why.

Please share this with your network to help educate those who might not see the full picture.
